    Hiyas,

uhm, I have a Sega Saturn Model 1 manufactured in Mar 1996 with a noisy drive mechanism, aside from the noise, it's aesthetically more pleasing than my 2nd Sega Saturn Model 1 (which is also made in Mar 1996) but compared to the beat up one, it's pretty noisy! It's actually as loud as a Dreamcast! Anyway, I was wondering if this is going to be an easy fix. I'd like to hope that it's something like adding some kinda grease or lubricant to the gears, or replacing the rubber band thingy but the reason I ask is because I'm new to Saturn ownership and I wanted to ask more knowledgable people to know if this is actually a sign of bad things to come?

    Thanks c:

A noisy drive could be the rails sticking, so the gears could be crunching. I'd say stop using that system, and re-grease the rails with any type of grease other than cooking oil.

You should be good to go :) I do this to many of my systems that are top loaders.

Spinning noise is sign of dying motor. laser seek noise should not be noisy...

It sounds like a laser-seek as the drive mech moves the laser to read another part of the CD. The spinning noise you're referring to is the thingy that spins the disc or the motor that actually makes the moving of the laser possible? Does the motor increase speed or something as it does this? I'm not sure how that works though... If it is that, is that something hard/expensive to replace?

    Thanks!

Haha it's no Dreamcast after all!
I've used Tamiya ceramic grease for my Saturns and not had any issues so far.
There's no rubber bands in the Saturns thankfully, just lots of plastic gears.
Any chance you could do a video of it loading up a game to see if we can guess the part that's dying? :smile-new:

open it up and give it a good lube up then use it for a bit to make sure everything is working nicely and see if there is any improvement, could be the motor on its way out too but maybe not, worst case scenario swap the parts in from the beat up Saturn.

Seconding Tamiya ceramic grease, since it's designed for use on plastic gears, it's your safest choice for the Saturn. From the sounds of things, yeah, it could do with a clean and a re-grease.

You can use mutli-purpose grease. Doesn't matter which grease you use as long it's not cooking oil. Oh and WD-40 isn't grease.

Not really, I find spray lithium grease much better. Inox is good "WD40" is lolly water. Allthough it is good for under the bonnet detailing of a car. Makes all the plastic induction pipes, covers etc shiny.

Maybe they didn't do any better that time and said screw it, let's just advertise it for what its been doing the whole time! :p

At any rate, thanks guys for helping me, I guess I was just overreacting, though I suppose if I get some of that grease, it couldn't hurt to do a little internal cleaning and re-greasing c:

diy stores ebay or autofactors should carry grease, i've picked some up the past few days and lubed my Saturns up, the brand was "Carlube" and it was the lithium grease i used but they also do silicone it was £1.98 for a 70g tube so no huge cost involved and seems to work well. may be even cheaper online but i just picked it up locally for convenience.

That's what we're all here for! A little Spring cleaning (or Autumn in my case) never hurt anyone... well as long as you do not stab the laser accidentally! :topsy_turvy:
I always re-grease my Saturns after taking them apart. You can never have enough grease.

Is any of this stuff OK to grease up a drive? I have the one with the blue label which is general purpose grease. I need to reapply grease to a PS1 laser.
