Lately I've become very intrigued with the sega nomad. Does it share the same issues with bad caps that many gamegears face in this day and age? Is there anyone here, or on another forum, who might provide some of the more popular nomad mods - such as adding a p1 controller port? And because I don't have a separate genesis system and don't exactly want one if the nomad can be the equivalent - what all is involved in modifying the system/the 32x, to get the 32x to work with it when hooked up to a TV? I've heard this can be done, but haven't seen a guide that discusses what is involved - though I did hear the 32X in its plastic shell blocks the video out port on the nomad.
As long as the cartridge slot handles it (at least that's how Master System support is fixed). Nomad already outputs RGB. So I don't think video needs changes if using a TV. Still impractical for cost and ergonomic reasons. Nomad is more expensive than Genesis even before modding.
From my own personal experience they don't, although maybe I've just been lucky. I've had 3 GG's die slow deaths due to cap issues but my original Nomad has no issues whatsoever. Even the original battery pack still holds a charge, although not nearly as long as it did 16 or so years ago when I bought it.
They absolutely do! Cap replacement is very recommended for any USED Nomad you pick up. Most people cut off the original screen to replace with a LCD that they glue in place, which is ok, but I wish there was a better way to do it. I would replace all the capacitors before you do any other mods. I am dealing with one right now that both the brightness and volume dials have been broken off. With the LCD mod, the brightness dial becomes pretty much worthless, but the volume dial is the harder one to find.
And an update on this! I have confirmed that if you have an old game gear that you don't feel like fixing and the dials are broke, you can just swap both of the ones from a Game Gear and they work perfect!
