So, i don't quite remember the stance this forum has on emulation and all, but i'll ask anyway since you dudes know your stuff; is there a way to install emulators and and stuff on the harddrive of your original xbox without paying for a modchip (and having the assle of finding someone who still do mods on xboxes)? 'cause i got an xbox lying there, and i think it would make a better emu machine than my dreamcast (as much as i like it). Thanks.
Well there is a way to run homebrew via a exploit in splinter cell (the first one) and a way to run linux via mech assault.
Yeah, you can do the mod with Splinter Cell or Mech Assault. I wired a usb plug onto the end of the xbox controller extension and used that to get the files on to the memory card (since Xbox Action Replays are hard to come by). There are tons of tutorials on all of it. I installed evoX and used it mainly for FBA-XXX Pro before I bought a Supergun and some pcb's.
I used nDure for my last softmod and the guy hasn't had any complaints. If you can use something other than an Action Replay to get the saved game to your Xbox I recommend doing that. The AR software kind of sucks and if I had to put the game back on a memory card I don't know if I could (which is why I just leave it up there). And yeah, the Xbox makes a fantastic emulation machine. If you're feeling brave you should swap out the hard drive for something bigger.
Its easier to use someone with a moddified xbox to put the files needed on to the memory card, you can use a custom xbox to USB cable, then use the action replay to put the files onto the memory stick and then transfer them to the xbox via the cable, only problem with this is that you have to trick the action replay to think that the usb stick is an action replay memory card, this is a long process that involes changing some internal reference numbers to make the program this its an action replay memory card, very long and probably not worth doing, but it is there.
get an xbox action replay, download the softmod installer for splintercell, mechassault or 007 and run them via the campaign mode. good to go.
If your xbox is below v.16 then I would suggest flashing the bios(tsop)on it.Its just like having a modchip.
Just follow this tutorial: http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox-softmod/20179-softmod-krayzies-ndure-installer-1-1-1-a.html Youtube vid: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=nM73-eK7XdQ
^No, but the hard drive needs to be lockable and there are more steps involved. The only problem with this is that there is still soldering involved, which is probably what cahaz was trying to avoid. It makes things easier when trying to upgrade the hard drive, but that's about the only advantage. Using Xbox Live with a softmodded Xbox is also possible, as long as you have a shadowed C drive. I'm pretty sure this a feature of Ndure. I don't *think* the softmod is possible if you're using a newer version of any of the exploited games (eg. Platinum Hits). There are non-Platinum Hits versions of Mechassault that do not work, either.
you need non platnium hits. As for mechassault, it was caught early and there is actually a model number on the disc that needs to be matched up, knowing it's a non platnium version is not enough. I used Krazies installer, and yes you can use live, you put the exploit game in, run the installer again, and you can remove or deactivate the mod. Deactivate it, and your xbox turns off. turn it back on, and it's normal. You can upgrade your hard drive but oyu need a few programs. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263
Its the easiest soldering to do.I suck at soldering I have flashed two xbox's.Also a hardmodded xbox is alot safer than a softmodded xbox when it comes down to it. And I have softmodded xbox's before, its easy but adding a hdd to it can be a pain in the ass.
I would TSOP an Xbox, but I don't see much of a need for it these days. One of my Xboxes is softmodded, and the other has an Xecuter 3. The softmod does everything I need it to. What do you mean by a hardmodded Xbox being safer? With earlier softmods this was true, but the latest ones are solid as a rock. This is, unless, you're talking about someone accidently deleting whatever files the softmod may be using. If the eeprom and hard drive key have been backed up, though, then it's not an insurmountable problem. The user could even retain their data if this is the case. Not trying to be snarky; just curious.
So if you have a modified xbox already can you just FTP the softmod save files across to the xbox, and then on to a memory card?
