I have a NTR-A85E-USA New Super Mario Bros. "Not For Resale" demo game pak that works just fine in my original (phat) DS, and used to work in my DSi XL, but now produces the "An error has occurred" screen in both my DSi XL running 1.4.5u and my son's new crystal red 2DS which is on 7.0.something. Has anyone experienced this issue before? Is Nintendo really blocking its own demo carts with firmware updates - it definitely ran on my XL when it was on 1.4.1u.
Tested on my wife's 1.4.3u DSi last night and it still works on there, seems to confirm it is blocke by 1.4.4 or 1.4.5 update. Perhaps Nintendo identified a possible exploit with the NFR demo carts. Kind of crazy blocking your own software though, sort of like when Microsoft used to randomly delete swathes of corporate XP licenses, causing WGA errors in legit Windows copies. EDIT: found reference to a similar issue with a Mario Kart demo pak here: http://www.dshack.org/forum/index.php?/topic/1310-3ds-wont-read-mkds-demo-cart/
Possible that demo units are on certain firmwares and not updated. Not sure how relevant this is, but demo units are parental locked so you can't update the systems. How the 3DS ones are anyway.
The other day I tested my Tetris DS NFR on my 3DS and it didn't work. Then I put it on my DSi and it worked, I just don't remember which version of the firmware it has.
same thing happened to me with my mario kart ds not for resale it used to work on my ds and my dsi xl but now it doesn't work anymore on my ds or dsi xl
The demo was made for the original DS, not the DSi, or 3DS/XL/2DS. Because It's a DS game, Nintendo blocked it out of other systems. I have the same problem with my Mario Kart DS demo on my 3DS. The solution? Use Action Replay DSi with it.
