But the Japanese are generally too honest and nice for that. I lost my wallet in Tokyo once, had Y200,000 in it along with my birth certificate and a number of other documents. It was handed to the police and once I showed my passport I got it back and everything was still in it and the person who handed it in didn't want any kind of reward....
A wallet on the ground is a no-brainer for most people (even me... I would've turned it in). An envelope placed in your mailbox? Totally different. I heard somewhere there's a law stating anyone who turns in cash that is later claimed is entitled to some type of reward for it, but of course nobody offers. Probably "too embarrassed".
