Animals sense when something is out of whack, such as imminent death. Notice how there were hardly any animals (except most domesticated and zoo animals) that died from the 2004 tsunami's? There are stories of animals heading towards the highlands just a few hours before the tsunami's hit. More logical explanation is that the cat senses sorrow and lays next to the dying to simply comfort them until they pass away.
For crying out loud, the animal is just smelling some pheromone-like substances that get released when a person is about to die.
Yeah, I really doubt that the cat is trying to comfort dying people. Probably the cat noticed something pleasurable happens to it when a person dies (maybe a smell, attention from nurses, or a blanket as the article suggests) and so it started paying very close attention and gradually came to notice signs of a person's death. It may not even realize that the person is dying, it might just think "if a person farts 3 times in succession, then I'll get petted by the nurses as long as I'm curled up next to the person."
Now you can conduct a social experiment. Did the cat stare into the TV camera? How long did it sit there? Now check your local papers next week to see if there is a sudden rise in the number of obituaries! (Notices of deaths) If so, you KNOW for a FACT the cat did it by some feline Voodoo shit
Damn right, perhaps it is a serial killer and smoothers the old people in their sleep! Actually, what a great excuse for a serial killer! It's like The Son of Sam in NYC during the 1970's heatwave. He said the neighbouring dog was the Devil and told him to do it. Hmmmm? Makes you think!
