A couple weeks back I traded a painting for some video game consoles and games. One of the things I got was a GBA SP. I gotta say, the light makes all the difference in the world. How did I ever live without it?! I have some awesome games for it but only a few. I gotta know what else to get. I am interested in all the Castlevanias, and want to get mario kart. What else? Any good 2d scrolling shooters? I'm not very familiar with the GBA library. Just GB

Here are games which I presently have on my GBA emulator on PSP that I enjoy:

    Super Mario Advance
    F-Zero Maximum Velocity
    Rayman Advance
    Super Puzzle Fighter 2
Super Mario Advance 4 (super mario brothers 3)
    Double Dragon Advance
    Contra Advance-Alien wars
    Advance wars one and two
    All Castlevania series
    Mario Cart-Super Circuit
    Mr Driller 2
    R-Type 3
    All three Sonic Advances
Super Mario Adventure 2 (snes super mario world)
    Tetris Worlds
Wario Inc and Wario Land 4

Edit: Reading your post again, I see you are specifically asking for 2-D shooters.

I haven't done much research but R-Type 3, as listed above is a great title.

Gradius was also a great game for the GBA if you want a SHMUP. I suggest a flash cart, they are cheap and no need to carry around carts. Neoflash makes one for under $45 shipped to your house with about a 99% comparability rate. Except for games like Botkai that used a solar panel while playing of course dont work but the rest are a go. Best of all it works with the gba player for GC

Don't get R-Type III on GBA, it's a terrible port.

WarioWare is a must. Yoshi's Island is another great one, if you want a really accurate portable version of the SNES game.

donkey kong country series are good. but snes ones are better choices. still, being able to save anywhere and the added bonus content for gba is good.

I once had Pokemon Red when I was 12 or so. I should get into that again. Donkey Kong Country is always a classic title

If you haven't played a Pokemon game since red then you totally need to try gold/silver or crystal I know it's not a GBA game but in my opinion that is where the series peaked

    Golden Sun.

One of the most underrated and overlooked RPG's of the last 20 years.

I pre-ordered it when it first came out and took 3 sick days from school just to play it.

I know it's not a shooter but you'd be silly not to try it.

Not sure if you know this, but there is also the Gameboy Player for the Gamecube. As you discover the GBA games, they can also be played on the big screen. Then there is the GBA link to certain Gamecube games, try Pacman Vs, a very well done party game.

If you're also looking to play some classic gameboy games on it you need to check out Trip World.

I concede that yes, the GBA version of R-type 3 isn't a great title. First I went to the internet and the word on the street is that it sucks. Secondly, I loaded up R-Type 3 on my PSP SNES emulator and compared the two for myself and yes, it's not a good port.

Graphically it looks great, but the detection area is faulty which makes the game very difficult adding to the claustrophobic nature of the way the game was ported to the handheld. Honestly, I haven't played it too much but was impressed with the presentation. This is what happens when you have thousands of roms , the dedication factor to a particular game suffers, unless it's absolutely killer.

Wise decision to avoid, especially since you appear to be going after actual cartridges.
