hi all, im so tired of windows and i always wished to install linux on my computer.. i've tried to download Mandrake 9.1 long time ago but it failed. I've finally found a magazine with a linux compliation: Knopix 3.6 i've never heard of knopix (well, im a total newbie for linux) and i would love to know if it's a good one. could i play with my games on it? is it reliable? stable? well, in other words:would you recomand it to someone who's new to linux and that what an useful , graphic based and games oriented OS ? thx.
Re: Knopix 3.6 Knoppix's deal is that it's a live Linux distro that'll boot directly from CD, so that you could get some kind of feel for the OS before you actually install it.
I use knoppix and only knoppix on my PC! :smt023 It's the best verson of linux I ever used (I thought mandrake sucked big time) . To do a HD install type "knoppix-installer" in the root.
i buyed it! :-D but i have bad things going on, each time i try to run it , after the checking of my drives , it show me an error. (here is the last couple of lines that i always get) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scanning........ HDA HDC HDD can't find knoppix file system, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell. Press the reset button to quit. Additional builtin command avaliable Cat mount unmout insmod rmmod ismod knoppix#_ (flashing bar, i must enter something here) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- so, like i said earlier , im a total newbie too linux and i would like to know why this is apearing, what must i do, can i fix the problem (if there's a problem), and will i be finally able to see a linux desktop soon? thx. :smt045 EDIT: i also got this: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- you passed an undefined mode number Press <Return> button to see video modes available Press <Space> or wait 30 seconds to continue ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- what does it mean?
nevermind, i don't know why ...but it worked without any problems the last two time i started it. 0_o anyway, now i would love to finally be able to connect to the internet with it (im on xp right now), i use a D-link PCI ethernet card linked to a speedstream 5200 that i can use with USB ports too. Anyone could turn me to the right direction? also, how can i connect as a root? i've tried but it asked me a pasword, wich i don't have any clues of it... 0_o your help is very liked by a linux newbie, cahaz. :smt033
And now you see why in its current state Linux will never surpass or even equal Mac OS, much less Windows (fanboys and flaming not allowed, it is an honest opinion based on the anti-user format of most Linux distros.). "Sweet, I got it installed! . . . . Shit, how do I do things now?"
Unless you can compile them for your distro ^_^ Saying that, there should be a linux version of Doom 3 coming out soon, if it's not out already.
well, whne you started to use windows , you didn't know how it worked.... now that you know, you need to restart everything if you whant to use linux. its just a mather of time and of reeducation. :smt045 oh and yes, i can play my games WINE is installed on the boot-cd. :-D
Firstly, kudos for your bravoure :smt023 In my job of freelance PC-serviceman, Knoppix is probably my most often used tool I don't know how well it works in terms of HW support though. If you have a not-too-esoteric network card and connect to your modem via LAN, it works like a dream, in my experience. Using USB modems with Linux is a world of pain though. And still, if you plan on running Linux from the HD you should eventually move on to a bigger distro. I can recommend SuSE, it comes with LOADS of programs and the install is very user-friendly. The only thing is the partitioning.
I used Knoppix once or twice. It is very nice... but nothing can beat SUSE. I just installed SUSE on my laptop last week and I am in love :smt033
I decided to give Knoppix a shot myself.....and I must say, it works great I'm posting from it now (it autoconfigured my itnernet conenction! w00t Easy enough to figure out how to do all I want....just got AMSN running too so I can chat with people I think I'll mess with this for a while then maybe look into installing Linux on my second HDD....
Well this can be a good thing too, keeps the people who are not going to take the time to learn it away :-D . GNU/Linux is all about choices, and in order to make wise choices you must learn about the options available to you. Oh well that's just how I feel.. Also there is a version of doom3 out for linux, and I get much better performance in linux (on avg +10 fps) than in windows. At first I had worse [performance], but nvidia released new video drivers a month or so ago and most all nvidia card users got a major performance increase. There's just so much I like about having a GNU/Linux system, so simple to load drivers, never need to reboot except to load a new kernel (no need to reboot to load new drivers), how I always know what's going on in my system with great logging utilities, the ability to do pretty much anything from a command line, and the wonderful user community for support. Anyway that's enough OT rambling for me, now to try and help cahaz connect to the internet. Ok first do you normally use dhcp, or do you manually configure your connection? Get a command line once in knoppix, and first switch to root (type su root, this will only work if your user is in the wheel group, which it should be for knoppix) Every knoppix cd I've used never had a password set for root, if it asks you try knoppix. Once root type ifconfig. If a driver was loaded for your network card you should see some output for eth0, if so check to see if it's correct (your ip address, broadcast, netmask). If you didn't see any output for eth0 you'll have to load a driver manually, in which case we'll need to search what driver to use with a D-Link card, and type modprobe drivername. To see a list of drivers available type modprobe -l | less, the | less will allow you to scroll through the list of drivers, press q when you want to stop. Although seeing a list really isn't going to help unless you know the name of the driver.. Also to see which drivers are currently loaded into your system type lsmod as root, post the ouptut to that and ifconfig and I'll try and help you as much as I can.
(Edit: read my new post below before answering to my questions!) well, thx for all your help and support everybody! but , if anyone noticed ( :-D ) it's been 3 days since i didn't connected to assembler's forums. Why? because of a big journey with linux during these 3 days. here's the story: Only one day after buying a magazine with knoppix 3.6 in it, i found another magazine with Mandrake Linux 10.1 Community in it. i always dreamt to find linux inside a magazine in my little town.... and in 2 days i found two magazines! Remembering what i heard (well,.... read) on internet about Mandrake and thinking about the situation a second , i finally purshased it too (yeah, i know..). The first thing i've done was to erase xp of my machine for good (what mistake i've made!)! and i installed lMandrake, i was surprised by how easy the installation was and i finally discovered my Mandrake KDE desktop for the first time. So , i was all new to linux and wanted to read more about it on internet.... i opened the Konsole, entered ''sudo su'' and ''mc'' , went to user/sbin file and scrolled down 'till i find pppconfig......wich wasn't there (ok.... all those things where took from internet before i installed linux , i'm not a pro at all!) searched in the system, entered the root command many times.... didn't found anything.... so, here i am , 2 days letter, on a windows pc again....(DAMN!) could someone tells me the exacts and precise actions and commands i must do (and where i must go to find drivers and where i install those too) to be able to go on internet if i have a PCI Ethernet AOpen 10/100 mps card with a Speed stream 5200 modem on it? help would be REALLY apreciated ! :smt045 thx in advance! :-D oh, and another thing, what can i do exactly with WINE? can i play every games i have for windows on it? and i have problems with my sound too on linux, they find the excact driver for my built in sound card , but i hear absolutly no sounds. any thoughts?
woot! i'm now on internet with mandrake and i use it to write on assembler, i'm proud of myself! :-D (hey ! don't laugh!) no i need to resolve the no sound problem and im wondering how do i install things? i just downloaded AMSN and Mozilla FireFox, but i just can't find how-to... do i need to use the konsole or something? i need to acomodate myself with all this new stuff, but im learning very quickly (i think!) :-D in searching on the web to find answers for my questions but i found nothing yet. If someone can help me , that would be really apreciated! thx in advance. cahaz
I don't know about mandrake...but in SuSE you use the konsole to install AMSN. I cant get firefox to install on SuSE though >_< It'll install but not run....though I just got WINE working today so I shall experiment with running my windows programs EDIT=== Doh! I forgot to put how Extract the archive file somewhere(liek teh desktop) and then go into teh folder. Right click...go to actions>open console here. In the console type "./AMSN" but without the speechmarks....and it should install. After that, it appeared on my menu bar in SuSE.
thx for your help, deathcoaster, but sadly , it doesn't work. i right clicked in the folder i made for amsn, opened the console and taped ./AMSN and this message apeared: /usr/bin/env: wish: No such file or directory tried with non-captial letters and the same thing apeared. then i tried to enter ./AMSN-0_94 but didn't work etheir. any thoughts? oh, also, i've downloaded amsn graphic installer on the official website of amsn. i opened it and.... nothing inside , uh? linux is strange for a guy who never touched something else than windows in the past , but this strangeness apeal me. :-D cahaz.
