Thinking of getting an NR Reader, but have a couple of questions first if someone wouldn't mind answering them?

    1. Can you, or can you not play burned miniDVDs on this console? From what i've read, you can't, because it only plays NR Reader discs. Correct me if i'm wrong?

    2. If you can't, would soldering a Xenos mod chip to the DVD Drive mobo make any difference??

    Thanks in advance!

You can swap the laser unit from a retail console to play originals/backups (with a chip)

Ahh ok thanks. So I would be chipping the NR Reader factory mobo with a swapped retail drive ontop?

The chip (assuming xeno gc) goes on the drive PCB. So you could be modding a retail drive and just putting it into a NR reader

Ahhhhh ok. So it's a glorified retail console in other words. :grief: Sorry, I was thinking in PlayStation tech. There's a laser assembly, and the board underneath, which are two separate things. So the Gamecube "laser unit" is both the laser assembly, and the bottom board, which is the "Drive PCB." Gotcha.

    Correct.

Chips that replace the IPL (like a qoob) - I am unsure how those behave with a NR reader

I would love to find out, but don't want to risk soldering onto the NR Reader PCB only to find out it doesn't work... Curious as to if anyone has tried this, and what the outcome was??

Aside from the region switch (which can be easily added to a retail unit), the only difference between a NR unit and a retail unit is the drive assembly.

Everything that makes an NR Reader an NR Reader is in the assembly. The motherboard is the same as in a retail system.

If you put a retail drive assembly into a NR Reader you will have a retail NGC in a pretty NR case.

I had an NR reader with a faulty laser assembly so I swapped it out for a retail modded with Xeno GC and it works great.

With what you have said so far I would say you'd be as well putting the money down and getting a working NR reader and also a modded cube and leaving them both as is.

I have a spare NR reader for sale at present but shipping would be from the UK. If your interested I could get you a quote.

Interested. Mesquite, Texas here. I'm looking for one that's boxed, and that the serials on both the box and console match up. Yours good?
