I have just recently bought an NTSC Snes for use on a standard PAL lcd tv. I plug it in, i get black and white video with corruption/lines. I think i can rule out a 50/60hz issue as i have tried Composite on two different TV's, and i still get corruption. I have a modded PAL Snes which runs just fine at 60hz on both TV's using Composite.

Ellaborating... The Composite feed shows either a screen with many black and white vertical lines across the width of the display, or a screen showng a blank/white picture with moving, corrupted looking, blocks/squares, and various video artefacts (this is on Maro Kart). The only point where the video seems even remotely ok is when the position numbers appear on screen during the gameplay demo, but still with a black and white screen (pictures to follow).

There is a little rust inside on the protective metal plates which leads me to believe the console itself is faulty. I get sound perfectly ok just to add, so the console works somewhat.

Is this fixable? What could it be? I just don't get good luck with older consoles :( But then again i did get it cheap...

I'm going to open it up further, have a look over, give it a good clean and then see what happens after that.

Have you tried RGB? NTSC snes needs a different cable than PAL.

I haven't tried an NTSC RGB cable yet no. I can grab one for pretty cheap if you think it'll help? :)

Maybe. VRAM or the video encoder could have defects.

Doesn't sound like NTSC50. Composite would attempt that if the console was modded for 50hz without color fix.

The console itself is unmodified, bog standard.

EDIT: Thank you for your help btw :)

EDIT 2: Right... I've opened her up... It is not a pretty sight. There are white limescale deposits everywhere. And rust... Lots of rust. PPU2 is definitely fucked.

I think it's safe to say this is the issue.

Isopropyl alcohol, a toothbrush/q-tips and a bit of tlc by the looks of it...

Where can i get a new PPU2 without buying a new console lol? :dejection:

EDIT 3: Can someone explain to me, or point me in the right direction, how to test the IC's inside the Snes please? Anyone?
