Yes and lots of countries can use nuclear power, I bet the US would love to have several middle eastern states and Africa to have nuclear power plants. No point giving percentages if the data is skewed. In say Japan, Nuclear power from 55 plants gives over 30% of the countries power. Of the two largest countries in the world China has a large amount of coal and it burns huge amonts of this to create power for the country and Russia well they burn huge amounts of oil and gas. If you want to bandy stats around then at least weight them. Of course the main sources of power, those Oil and Coal power stations are clean and don't cause any harm to health what so ever... Nuclear isn't perfect, but run well and they pose less of a threat to health long term then coal and oil fired power stations do. Solar, Geothermal, Wind, Waste and Hydro are much better forms of power but none of them are perfect and all have their own advantages and disadvantages.
It's tough to call a direct contamination of an area like the one in the Ukraine and an indirect one of whole Europe a disadvantage on the same level as those of other energy sources. Oil and coal power stations maybe limited, but at least they don't contaminate a whole region and sentence hundreds of people to death or sicknesses, even if something goes horribly wrong. There are several ways of generating energy without oil/coal when we run out of our ressources. Why do we have to choose the most dangerous one? Clean&Safe? Well, maybe there have not been as much nuclear emergencies as new PSP revisions in the last three years, but once something happened, it will last for long. The biggest part of Pripyat close to Chernobyl is still contaminated as decontamination is a very expensive thing to realize. Therefore it would even economically be more reasonnably to install non-nuclear plants if anybody thought about possible accidents, but as we all know: they just hope nothing is gonna happen and as long as this hope does its work, everything will be fine. Afterwards, everybody cries and is worried about his or her health.
Well, parris, When I visit you, ah, I'll wear my my bio suit  case bad wind come your way, Lol!
I'm amazed this thread got to 23 posts and lasted so long frankly! There have been worse leaks in France since ;-)
why worry about it, say a plant blows up in a neighbouring country, what would you do? start running the other way?
Um, a great majority of the pollution in the air is not the product of man, but of nature. As for land-based pollution, then, yeah, that's us.
