You can find stuff like that just about everywhere... Chopped off monkey heads in Indonesia (warm brains!), drinking goldfish alive,...

Still, I agree with you that Japan seems to be a bit unique in this respect.

I don't know, I wouldn't mind trying some of the stuff mentioned. Raw monkey brain is asking for a neural disorder, but something like bull testicles... if you're going to eat offal like heart, lungs or whatever (and if you've ever eaten a meat pie bought from a shop - that's you), then is there really that much difference? I wouldn't pay much for it, but if it was offerred I wouldn't refuse. I'd be kind of interested to see if the insects and bugs tasted good, too.

I guess I'd draw the line at eating a live goldfish. Live animals in general, I don't want anything wriggling in my mouth, and eating a live animal or watching them getting cooked alive is too grim for me. About these "cruelty" restaurants, I don't really have a problem with seeing animals being killed in front of me, so long as they aren't endangered species and have been fairly treated. In fact I'd say that any meat-eater who does have a problem in that situation is a bit of a hypocrit, provided the animal's death is quick and painless - it's more than can probably be said for most of the meat I eat, at least.

I once seen a show called Red Hot and Ready, and the chef was cooking lobster, and took a live lobster, snapped it in half and started digging out its inards while it was still alive, i found it most cruel

This thread is not disgusting at all. I find other cultures food interesting, although I probably wouldn't try a lot of it.

I don't mind animals being raised for food, but putting a live fish in hot oil does not need to be done.

So RGGG do you eat poutine? That dish is about like Loco Moco... heart attack on a plate.

    I meant Loco Moco.

    Which is:

One fried egg on top of
One grilled hamburger patty on top of
Two scoops steamed rice then topped with
    brown gravy with a big
scoop homemade macaroni salad on the side

    That's ono grind!

I only eat beef killed by a frozen potato shot to the head:lol:

What people think of as British food is pretty disgusting, I'd mostly agree with that. Apparently British food got totally fucked by world war 2 rationing, and never quite recovered. There are tonnes of really incredible traditional foods in more rural places in Britain, it's just that even most British people don't know.

I'm not sure if you meant to imply that mass-produced meat pies are different elsewhere... processed meat is pretty grim wherever you are.

Yep, in fact I saw one of the "live grinders" they use for hamburgers. I tell you, that thing looks like something out of Quake or Doom.

That's why I eat steaks. If there's something I agree with the french is that is better to have little yet of high quality ratter than superzise and Q-class meat.

Most people just think of boiled to death dishes from what I've read on other forums (when it comes up).

The vast majority of foreigners seem to bring up roast beef and Yorkshire puds, which I find weird as it's not all that noteworthy (eaten with our crooked teeth of course, which is a really weird stereotype). In terms of day to day stuff, I suppose boiled veg are common enough in crappy restaurants here, though it's more of a feature of mass catering places (canteens and the like) than restaurants. Perhaps there's more instances of mass catering in the UK?

Food did seem nicer in general in France, being the last European country I visited, but then the only visit where I was paying attention to the food was the time I was in Paris, and a restaurant in a capital city really ought to make good food. I wasn't particularly struck with the American cuisine I tried when I visited a couple of years ago - most remarkable was the size and fatty content, neither of which equates to quality. I'd shy away from saying that American food is bad in general though, two weeks doesn't constitute enough time for judgement.

Well, here is an example of what I've read:

I've never been to the UK, but I'd imagine it's really not that bad. Also, if pub food is like bar food here... most is crap anyway. I'm talking about regular bar/sports bar food, not an upscale type of joint.

As for American food, I guess variations of others cuisine is what we do best.

Meh, I could write a similar diatribe on American diners. Pub food is usually pretty cheap and eaten by uncomplaining customers, if you want something better you go to a place which focusses on food rather than alcohol. For the record, some pubs have fantastic homemade food, but it's very difficult to tell before it arrives, since all pubs look approximately the same inside - I swear there must be a factory somewhere kicking out those worn-looking brass horseshoe things. Anyone who's ever been to a traditional British pub will know what I mean.

Incidentally, Breton ("No, I'm quite sure I want the authentic
Breton experience") is a place in France, and a language (spoken by even less people than Welsh, which must mean almost nobody).

I could too, like I said most bar food sucks. This quote is from an American guy... the country where some people think the food at AM-PM, Quicktrip or 7-11 is good.

I've never seen the word "Breton" used before.
