I recently uncovered my N64 and am having a hard time to get it to work. The light comes on but nothing happens just a black screen when I try and play Mario Kart or Mario 64. But now this is the odd thing whenever I put an expansion pack game in (Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64) they work up until a point then it crashes. DK64 crashes before the Rap scene and PD crashes before the title screen, all with full audio and visuals although PD suffered from tearing.

I am having a guess to think that something could be up with the GPU and the expansion pack is responsible for getting the games as far as they do, but as I am not technically minded I wouldn't really know or even how to fix.

Any one else had this experience before and if so, what would the best course of action be.

    Thanks in advance.

Can't say much but it sounds like the RAM on the console itself may be bad. The reason it kinda works with the expansion pack is because it uses that RAM in place of the onboard chips.

I might be wrong so don't quote me on this.

Did you try the games on another console to verify it's not the games?

N64's are generally tanks, but can have weird issues. My Jungle Green one is notorious for being stubborn. First things first, have you cleaned your N64? Might not hurt to give it a little cleaning before diving into what the problem may be.
