I've just bought a Super Famicom but I'm noticing some odd picture noise on the system. The interference on the screen seems to be related to the sound coming from the Super Famicom. So far the worst game is Power Instinct. The screen always has a wavy pattern over it except for when you listen to a song in the options. As the Super Famicom retrieves the sound data or uncompressed it, the image on the screen goes perfectly clear. no wavy lines at all. This is very odd. It does become more odd though. Take a look at these two shots from Hagane. The top shows the title screen. Near the top of the screen there are many thin lines that move back and forth in an annoying fashion. Head to the option screen though (bottom picture) and they disappear yet it's still the same background image. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I'm running the SFC through S-Video since that's the best I can do thanks to Japanese TVs no longer having scart. I do have component sockets though but I don't think the SFC can output component. Are you sure its the SFC and not the TV/Monitor? I'm having a very similar problem on an old Amiga RGB Monitor. When I hook up anything to it and put the volume up too loud I get weird lines too. Also some variation in color. At first I thought I was having another broken RGB cable, but later when I turned down the Monitors volume the picture went crisp. This seems to be caused by faulty speakers and the power of magnets or something inside the monitor in my case. Try muting the screen just for fun. It likely won't help in your case, so I have no further idea.
You aren't using a cheap ass cable are you? Maybe the quality of the cable is poor. That's all I could think of is the cable has bad sheilding or something. Though I couldn't tell what you meant by lines in the picture. It's a shame you can't get RGB anymore. ='( It really looks nice.
Is that an HDTV? I get the same thing with everything non-HD, even using RGB SCART produces crap interference.
if it's on a CRT could be just electrical noise related. I see no reason why a DAC chip would be affected in a way to variably distort the quality of the image, especially in relation to audio which is only fleshed-out in the speakers.
Audio can often be a bitch. I once had a system (nForce 2) that whenever I scrolled a webpage, it would click through my speakers. Got a new soundcard, problem solved. If you have a gamebit, check if the insulation on the system's been ripped out, maybe thats causing interferance. Also, try muting the TV or removing the audio cables from it. Maybe the issue is on the TV's side, not the SFC's.
Thanks for the help guys but it's none of those reasons. The audio comes through my Stereo not the TV so that's that one out. I'm using an official Nintendo SFC/N64/Game Cube S-Video cable. The TV is a flat screen CRT. My Saturn sometimes gives a shimmering image (again through S-video) when it loads data but I take it that's because it's very old and been used 5 times a week since 1994. All my other stuff runs perfectly through S-Video or component. I'll try cleaning the SFC's cable connections. Maybe that will help. Yakumo
Have another SFC or a composite cable? I think it's either the SFC or the cable. If using composite has the same problems, it's the SFC. If another SFC has the same problem with S-video but not composite, it's the S-video cable. If both consoles have problems with S-video but not composite it's your TV.
Thanks, Calpis. I have a N64 composite cable here so I'll try that. If there are no problems with that (fingers crossed) then I'll return the S-video cable to get a new one. I hope it is the cable. Yakumo
Well, it looks like it's the console. I get the same problem with both Composite and S-Video. I'll take it back tomorrow and change it for another one I think. Yakumo
Yes, indeed it was the console that was dead. Changed it for a new one today which works perfectly. Thanks again for the help. Yakumo
