Hi guys, Not sure if this is the right subforum for this topic but it didn't seem appropriate to post anywhere else. Anyway, so, I've just gotten an NTSC-J SCPH-18000 PS2 recently, DVD drive is a bit noisy but whatever it works fine. I used an RGB lead with it (Retro Console Accessories made) because most, if not all, my PS2 games run in 480i so I figured there was no point in using component. I played through Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 with no issue, played a few other games no problems, and then popped in my copy of Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil and it runs fine but if you've played the game, or it's predecessor Klonoa: Door to Phantomile for the PS1, the game is broken up into small sections and you progress by going through doors with a black and very short loading screen between sections of the level. This is the -only- game that the Framemeister gives me grief over, is when I enter into loading areas, the Framemeister simply stops. My monitor starts telling me that there is no HDMI cable connected, until I turn the Framemeister off and back on again and then it leaves me right was I was in the game, so I don't believe it's the game its self. So, I figured, why not, let's try component cables instead. Same problem. Took the PS2 away from the Framemeister and tried plugging in the component leads to my TV with an actual component input, and this issue does not occur at all, the game runs perfectly as intended. Any ideas or is there any information as to "game incompatibility" with the device? Thanks for reading/replying. PS: Figures it has to be my favorite PS2 title that doesn't play nice with the Framemeister D:
Hmm, that kind of thing happens with games that change resolution. Maybe it changes resolution for the loading sections. Thing is though, it doesn't usually "break" the framemeister. This sounds like it might be something different. Maybe the game sends a strange signal that the framemeister doesn't expect? I know some games unlock the FPS when it's loading (emulators prove this when you have the FPS visible), so maybe it does something with the output of the game at that point, and due to the framemeister's sensitivity to video signals, it throws it off? Are you able to bring up the framemeister menu when it happens?
Thanks for the reply/information. No, I can't bring up the menu while its in black screen "mode" or "No HDMI connected". However, I did discover that if I hit the D-terminal input on the remote, it comes back after re-syncing (that can't possibly be the right term but I hope it sounds correct). I did also notice that my status screen displays 720x480i when playing Klonoa, but the Framemeister is perfectly capable of handling odd resolutions for other things (Dreamcast for example).
Just throwing this out there. Have you tried increasing your sync levels. A different problem, but when my SNES was having trouble syncing because of bright screens, increasing the sync level solved it. If that doesn't work, I suggest asking people over at shmups.system11.org in their hardware section. They are very knowledgeable there about the framemeister.
I know what you mean, in Die Hard Arcade for the Saturn, it displays score screens (presumably) in 480i, but gameplay is 240p so by the time the game loads between the score secton and the gameplay, I'm getting my ass kicked with no way to defend myself. Another issue is in Chrono Cross for PS1, the pause/status/inventory (whatever) are in 480i, but gameplay is 240p, so I'm frequently waiting 10 seconds whenever I bring up the menu, which is frequently. Very annoying. How do I go about increasing my sync levels? Sorry I'm a somewhat new owner of the device. Thanks guys!
It's in one of the menus. I'd have to go home and look to find it but I remember it not being too hidden in one of the menu subdirectories
Its on the Visual menu, at the bottom (sync level). I will say though, increasing the sync level doesn't always work 100%. I find my SNES loses sync occasionally for no real reason and I actually have to go to the sync level option every time I turn on the framemeister (only need to do this once per power cycle of the device) if I want to play my SNES, which is quite annoying. I don't even change the sync level at the time either... I just go to Sync Level, press OK and then the screen syncs properly. Bit weird to be honest... maybe someone here would know why it does this??
I'm new here, but I made an account to write this reply, I just recently got Klonoa 2 for PS2, and I use component cables with the system on the XRGB. I found that turning the sync mode to OFF will completely get rid of this issue. I was going to get an RGB cable for the PS2 originally, but after figuring this out I feel like for me the color space is close enough, even if it doesn't have the same quality. I hope this helps someone having this issue.
Thanks for this one, I just got my XRGB up and running and have noticed this a bit. It has yet to become a game breaking issue for me but once I get home I'll probably disable it.
In my library of over 40 games, this is the only one with this specific issue. Unfortunately this doesn't get rid of sync issues with PS1 games, which is the device's biggest(and really only) drawbacks imho. Glad this helped!
