I had a game on Genesis called Target Earth. Aside from being insanely difficult (without the invincibility code), I remember it for the strangest cheat code. At a certain point in one (or more?) of the levels, you could press START on the second controller when a specific enemy came on the screen. Then, that enemy could be controlled with the second controller. I vaguely remember it didn't give you much or any advantage in the game because that player couldn't cause any damage to enemies or something. What's the oddest cheat code you remember?
I consider Spyro 3's anti-piracy measures to be its biggest easter egg. I say this as it was a real treat for the people making pirated versions of the game. It was such a treat that one even sent a message to the devs (or sony i dont recall) saying "Thanks for a fun time!" If anything cameo easter eggs are my favorite or any callback to previous entries in a game.
Reminds me of putting in swear words into the Spiderman games and the man himself popping up and punching the word to a nicer word.
This is hardly a game-changing secret, but I always smile at the default high score table of the first WipEout on the Saturn, which reads: HAN DTO SSE DPI ZZA Genius... though I won't tell you how long it took me to figure out there was even a message hidden in there (too long is the answer, by the way)! As for actual cheat codes, it amazes me that I can still remember to enter ABZXYCAZCXBYAYCXBZ at the title screen of Battle Arena Toshinden to unlock its bonus characters - despite suffering from memory loss after a near fatal illness a few years back, for some reason that's firmly etched into my brain to the point where I didn't have to look that one up. Incredibly, it's become something of a muscle memory exercise for me.
Amiga New Zealand Story . Type motherfuckenkiwibastards or fluffykiwis at the title screen to enable cheat mode with unlimited lives
Old Midway arcade games had really weird cheats. Like NBA Jam's massive list of guest characters and big head mode (which always seemed really silly to me)
Midway's silliness continues with the long list of weird characters you could be in Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2. Bill and Hillary Clinton, Michael Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal, etc. One of the things I remember fondly about the game.
'bout Turok 2, there were other cheats pretty weirdo or uncommon : dev team faces over items, DK mode, Gouraud or wire model. there was that DK mode in GoldenEye too. Its seems to me that Medievil on PS1 had some funny dev text when you played a copy; after a while a playing, there was some kind of board with this text.
Blackhole Assault on the Sega CD had a cheat code that would unlock a variation of Pong. Amusingly, the Pong variant was better than the actual game...
Easily one of my top 5 favorite games. At the time, I was all about simultaneous multiplayer. We had the multitap and played all the way through with three human players. Never knew this was a an Easter Egg thing. I remember the faces creeping me out and thinking it'll get explained later in the game.
There was a cheat code in GTA: San Andreas on PS2 that turned everyone, including you, into clowns and other equally goofy looking people. I combined this with another two cheats that gave everyone random weapons, and made them fight each other, respectively. This was the point when I realized maybe I should stop playing and end it on a high note.
ILOVESEGARALLY2ANDSEGA Sega Rally 2 PC, input it before pressing start on splashscreen and it will unlock all cars, tracks and 10-year championships for you. Also, if you keep PgUp pressed while selecting some cars (Celica ST185, Stratos, ...) you'll get an alternate paintjob. Some words in Burnout 3: Takedown soundtrack are recursive (the word "apart" has many occurrences). I still have to figure out why, and I've been playing it for ten years. Here's the (almost complete) soundtrack playlist i made on spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/jack23247/playlist/07ALUTnsmJa1BKbs04UPp9 GTA's always been full of weird stuff.
Syndicate Wars on the PC had a cheat to give you all weapons and cash if you logged in as 'Pooslice'.
