Okay I searched but I haven't found an official thread on the PS4. As everyone knows its going to be the console to have and some are already saying its won the next gen console war which is quite a statement but judging from what I've read a fair one! Has anyone heard the praise the Duelshock 4 has been getting as well? Some people are even saying its the comfiest controller of all time. I'll believe it when I see it but it looks the best of the next gen consoles I have to say!
I've never understood the criticism of the DualShock 1/2/3. Granted, the d-pad sucks. That's a given. But then the d-pad on the 360 controller sucks too, at least I think so. Other than that, I think the analog sticks are pretty good - very smooth and springy feeling. They can't match the analog stick on the Gamecube controller, but that's a pretty high bar to set. I don't understand why the placement of the analog sticks is so important to people - personally I can play either way, it doesn't really matter. Concerning the PS4, I may or may not get one, though I probably won't get one at launch. One thing is almost for certain, though: I am not getting an Xbox One. Not unless they make some pretty huge changes to how the system works, which seems pretty unlikely at this point. I'm actually less concerned about the used games thing and more concerned about the mandatory Kinect, watching my every move.
I'm going for a launch PS4, just because I've never been able to afford a console at launch before now. And this will probably be my last console, so, why not.
I want one but it's selling out everywhere ALREADY plus I still have 7 years of catch up to do on PS3.
I think the biggest problem with the DualShock is the placement of the analogue sticks. It's just not right IMO. Oh and yeah, the D-Pads are shit. I'm seriously thinking about the PS4 though but I'll sure as hell be buying a 360 style pad to go with it and a nice Joystick for games that use digital controls.
Here's a quick overview on the PS4's controller from someone who actually uses the D-pad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCkKlFD0_Bg#t=9m53s
The Duel Shock D-pad Murders my thumb but I have no issue with the stick placement. Oddly I DO with the WII U stick placement which is the OPPOSITE of the Duel Shock.
WTF was that bullshit? Did you post the wrong link by accident? Anyway here's something I just happened to read earlier - Xbox One vs PS4 controller comparison: The new vibration system on the Xbox One controller sounds interesting.
I'll agree with that- the DS3 does feel really cheap and light for a controller, especially when it's got all those accelerometers and sensors inside. Glad to hear they've weighted the 4. And the design? I'm surprised to see no talk on that. Heres my input. It looks like the XBox 1. A lot like it, but it was done WELL. here's why- -The slanted the edges, giving way to boxy lines and the generic, cube shape. Still, it remains flat on the top, so I wont have stacking issues like I did with the PS3. -It had the glossy/matte split design which I think is overdone. They pulled that on the PS2 and on the PS3... I think it's time to retire that. Both M$ and Sony are guilty here. -The split lines on the front of the console break up the design and add depth to the look, just like the slanted edges. Once again, missing on the Xbox One and the reason for why the Xbox One looks so damn plain. Otherwise it's just as I expected- black, plastic console following suit with just about everything else on the market. In some sense, they're stuck with it so as to keep the cost within reason, but I would have liked something different and well designed. Sure, it's a new console, but in a way it doesn't feel "new". When the PS2 came out, I couldn't help but to keep looking at images of it. I can't say the same for this one. silver lining- it's better than that Xbox One, and I'm OK with displaying it on a shelf. And a last note- Why, Oh Why, does it not turn up pictures of the actual PS4 when I search "PS4" in google images?! It's still the pre-release mockup bullshit. Anyone seeing similar results?
Just a perspective of the controllers from someone who plays and commentates fighting games for a living i.e. games that actually require usage of the D-pad. I'm sorry you found the opinions he expressed regarding the DS4 and how it relates to the other controllers Sony has built to be bullshit.
What kinds of games do you play that you don't like the analog stick placement on the PS controllers? Do you play a lot of FPS games? Action/platformers? Fighting? I prefer to use the d-pad on the playstation controller, no matter what type of game (save for a few games, notably everyday shooter & katadama). did anyone have yanya cabalista with the skateboard add on for the analog sticks? that was a pretty cool idea...

Ah, I see. No problem. Yeah, the podcast I linked was long, but it should be timestamped. If the timestamp doesn't work, skip ahead to around the 10 minute mark. He goes through a very brief overview of what he felt the differences were between the two controllers and how they compare to other ones out there. As most people know, Sony's D-pad has always been a bit mediocre. They're not necessarily the best in the world, but they're not the worst. They basically remained the same throughout until the Vita came along. Anybody who has tried a Vita should be able to report that the new D-pad they're using is quite a bit better than anything Sony has offered before, but it was stuck on a handheld device. This new DS4 one seems like it may take inspiration from the Vita's in an effort to improve the experience when using the D-pad because it's still quite an integral input device in controllers with certain games. The Xbox 360 was known for having a crap D-pad. It can deliver some solid inputs once you take the time to get used to it, and the newer revision with the rotating one helped out quite a bit, but the biggest problem is that the thing is just weak. It's quite well known for simply sheering off and leaving you with a completely broken controller. Most fighting game pads are based off of the Saturn pad, and that controller is one of the most well-known and most respected D-pads out there. The 360 kinda tried to emulate that style, but it failed in terms of overall strength more than anything else; the other stuff can generally be fixed simply through practice. The Playstation controllers were always kind of a mix between the round Sega disc style and the straight Nintendo style -- a unique hybrid of sorts. It was average, but the controllers really need to be broken in before you can use them to their full potential. Most people do not like super stiff D-pads, so you would see a lot of people (especially fighting game players) just constantly mash the shit out of their D-pads in order to help loosen them up a bit. The DS2 was pretty notorious for needing to be broken in. The PS3's controller came along, and a lot of people didn't like how it felt even after you put the hours into the controller. It was quite a bit lighter (even the later rumble model feels lighter), the actual dimensions were slightly different, the triggers were pure shit and a lot of people just started using their trusty DS2 controllers with PS3 adapters for tournaments. From what everyone seems to be commenting with regards to the latest DS4 controller, it appears that the controller's D-pad will feel much nicer, not need as long of a break in period, have improved triggers and feel a bit better overall. The Xbox One also went quite a ways in terms of improving the D-pad, so that's also great news for those who may be picking that controller up. In the end, it's all opinion based. Some people actually hate the Saturn D-pad, and some people really like the 360 D-pad. That said, the majority of the reviewers out there seem to agree that the DS4's D-pad is a nice step in the right direction. I can't comment on the hepatic feedback touch pad or whatever the hell it is because I never bothered to research it, and frankly, I don't really care much for that. To me, it seems like a gimmick more than anything else.
I watched the Sony PS4 reveal presentation (first one) and I was confused about Knack- to me, it doesn't really have a clear idea behind it- Yes, it is Pixar like, but then you're not really in a fantasy world... And a whole bunch of similar looking rubble forming some kind of a robot? Nope. Watching it leaves me feeling conflicted inside, for whatever reason.
