Whilst they *aren't* official in the sense they aren't made by Sony, they *are* licensed controllers. In fact, they are made by Katana and do work on a PS2 (as long as you've got the receiver for each one). Still reasonably rare, although you can still buy them new from some Amazon Marketplace sellers for around the $55 mark:

I've also found another example of this controller on eBay that shows the back of the controller (and also, in silver colour), so you can see properly.

Never used one myself, but I would expect they work otherwise they would not be licensed. :p

On a related note, I believe this is the system installed in the Toyota Sienna, the Advent ADV-10PS2: http://www.adventproducts.com/overhead-mobile-video/?sku=ADV10PS2 - It's a weird contraption: essentially, they've shoved a PS2 Slim, in its case, into a roof-mounted system. To change disc, you flip the PS2 down and open it as normal (click 'Additional Images' on the right to see this in all its glory).

That is a list of Sony-branded accessories, and doesn't list anything that is officially licensed for use on PlayStation through Sony's licensing program. Haven't you seen all the Mad Katz, Thrustmaster, Logitech & other brands of controller that are permitted to use the PlayStation logos and carry the official PlayStation holograms?

As far as I am aware, Katana also holds a license for to manufacture PlayStation 2 controllers, although that doesn't necessarily mean that they are any good (remember: Mad Katz also has a license). Whilst they aren't Sony-branded controllers, they should work OK (otherwise, why would Toyota choose to include them?)

They do still look cheaply made or just not well made in the first place. The labelling on the buttons look quite wonky :/
