I'm wondering if anyone here knows the costs involved in becoming an official Sony developer please?

I understand that the PSP dev kit is now €1200 (£1200 inc. VAT) and the new DECR-1400A TOOLs are about $2000 (£1500 inc. VAT). Correct me if I'm wrong. Do Sony include the SDK with the hardware, or is it an extra cost on top? What OS do they support?

Is the Sony SDK a decent suite of tools or do most developers end up using ProDG instead? How much is ProDG for a single seat licence?

Reading the SCEE R&D site it would also seem that there's a licence fee to pay on top of all the hardware and software costs. Does the cost of the licence depend on the size of the company, or is it a flat fee?

Thanks very much

From my understanding... You first have to get liscensed by paying a fee... you have to get the hardware wich is another fee, and software / SDK IDE Fee.

But thats just my understanding. your probally looking close to $75.000 -$100,000 USD Including taxes.

And yes I know this is an old thread... I thought I should Weigh in on it.

You need to have at least $500,000 in cash and $5,000,000 in insurance from what I remember, plus the cost per disc is pretty shitty the first time around.

You need a team of people and a list of prior works... can't remember the rest.

This is from 2002 mind you probably costs more now.

-----------

8.3 Insurance. LICENSEE shall, at its own expense, obtain a policyof general liability insurance by a recognized insurance company. Such policyof insurance shall be in an amount of not less than Five Million Dollars($5,000,000 USD) and shall provide for adequate protection against any suits, claims, loss or damage or any alleged intellectual property infringements by the Licensed Products. Such policy shall name NINTENDO as an additional insuredand may not be canceled without thirty (30) days prior written notice toNINTENDO. A Certificate of Insurance shall be provided to NINTENDO's LicensingDepartment within thirty (30) days of the Effective Date. If LICENSEE fails to
maintain such insurance during the Term, NINTENDO may secure and maintain
such insurance at LICENSEE'S expense.

-----------

Approval...

Submission of Game Concept. Before commencing development of a Game,LICENSEE shall submit to NINTENDO for approval, a Product Proposal. Such ProductProposal must include a detailed explanation of the manner in which the Gamewill utilize

-----------

Minimum amounts

Minimum Initial Orders. Upon placement of an initial order,LICENSEE shall order a minimum quantity of Ten Thousand (10,000) units of aLicensed Product. For sony it is 5000, so when people say only 1000 copies made they are talking nonsense.

This is a good opportunity to link to some official documents on that matter. The first two are mostly about the pricing of PSP and PS3 dev and test systems. The last (2007) one is about the SDK and states, for example, that SN Systems dev tools (like ProDG) are included in the official SDK.
