Hey, I have been having an issue with an OG Xbox I picked up at a garage sale a few months back. Often the system will work well, no issues at all, but on certain games, I am getting quite a bit of skipping audio, specifically the music. The main offenders are Outrun 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Steel Battalion, and Otogi. I have no issues with JSRF, and Gunvalkyrie seemed fine as well. My question is, is this my DVD drive, or might it be something else. I know that the OG can be a little touchy, reading discs, but I'm also concerned that maybe its an HDD issue. If it IS the DVD drive, can I replace it with any other supported drive, or do I say, have to replace a Thompson with a Thompson?
Not sure what the cause is, but you can swap the DVD drive with any other from an original xbox. Doesn't have to be the same brand - they all use the same connectors (IDE and power).
Yeah, I know that, just wondering if it could be anything else before I spend money to get a new drive. I may just say fuck it, and get an HDD for the modded system I have with a dead HD. Probably easier.
You can replace any DVD-ROM drive in the XBOX. Just not the Hard Disk, that's paired to the EEPROM. It's very hard to find replacement drives today, so you're better off getting a modchip and installing a large drive and load your backups while you can. (We all do this) OR use a standard PC DVD-ROM and external power, looks like shit but functions the same but you won't be able to eject like you normally would. The cause could be laser starting to fail, and if you notice very slow load times that's also a give away. You'll find the discs will not always load correctly, and you may hear the laser pushing for data. You can pot tweak and see if that helps you, but it won't help for long.
Ok, I have an Xbox with a modchip and a dead HDD, will any IDE drive work? I remember reading somewhere that the XBOX can only read up to 150GB or something like that, not to mention it seems tough to find IDE drives bigger than that at a reasonable price. Also, I assume I would need to install a dashboard to it, I've been trying to find a guide, but the Xbox One has made searching for original Xbox info hard as hell. Thanks for the info.
Any IDE drive will work yes, but you must set it up for the XBOX. Max hard disk size is 137GB, however some modchip BIOSes enables 137GB+ of space. You're not limited to use IDE drives, some IDE to SATA adapter boards are compatible with the XBOX, this may lower the cost and time of searching for a large IDE drive. 80GB has always been enough for me anyway. Download AID to install a dashboard has multiple selections and setup the new Hard Disk. Very simple once you once you run AID, you'll know what to do.
Why don't you take the DVD drive from the modchipped xbox and put it in your garage sale one to see if there's still a problem with the audio on those specific games?
I might, at some point just to see, though I just got a new HDD in for my modded one, hopefully I can just use that, and have one fully working modded one. We'll see. I appreciate the info. I'm looking forward to trying out the Assember releases. Quite psyched indeed.
I have a 320GB HDD in my soft-modded box, you can go even bigger with a SATA adapter. I've never had a modchip in the box, I installed UnleashX using the Splinter Cell exploit. then followed one of the many tutorials available to prepare a new drive using XBHDM (you will need a PC with IDE connectivity and a CDROM to run the linux that will make and lock your new drive). Once you've locked the drive and put it back in the XBOX there is another utility that allows you to partition the space over 137GB. I have F and G drives containing pretty much every decent XBOX game plus emulators with 100s of arcade and retro console games. Never use my DVD drive.
Only have a 120, but games aren't as big as I thought, ripping mainly my Sega ones right now, probably throw a few old favorites on there as well. I don't really need the box for emulation, as I have a PC hooked up to the same TV. Hardest thing to get used to is the odd behavior of the buttons. The power button doesn't seem to do anything when the executor is active, and the open button seems to either reset, just open the drive, or sometimes shut off the system. No clue how or why. I also have multiple banks apparently with this install, no idea what that is even supposed to mean. Still I'm happy that I have a working modded Xbox, now I can track down some of the imports I wanted to try out like Double Steal 2, and Wild Rings.
