A few months back I really got into Tame Impala and Lonerism is a staple on the Turntable (Mostly Side C) So I've been looking for more, I've found Pond, and Foxygen. Started listening to alot of Pink Floyd. Hendrix and the like. But I'm left wanting more. I think Psychedelic Rock came up in a vinyl thead not too long ago. So I thought I'd bring it up again.
Looks like you are already listening to Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. I would also suggest: Jefferson Airplane, Cream + Other Eric Clapton bands like Derek and the Dominoes, The Byrds, Nick Drake, Donovan, The Doors, Stone Temple Pilots + Scott Weiland (Solo Albums), Grateful Dead, The Mamas and The Papas, Traffic, The Moody Blues, The Who, The Zombies, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Steve Miller Band, Strawberry Alarm Clock...just to name a few. Also, since you like Pink Floyd, I would also suggest the Velvet Revolver cover of "Money" from The Italian Job (2004) soundtrack.
I got Heavy Cream this afternoon which is like 2/3rds of the band's catalog. Gotta have some Clapton. I know all the bands you mentioned, but it served as a good refresher course in old psychedelia. Animal Collective comes up in a lot of these conversations
Would King Crimson fit in this, or are they considered more progressive rock? I'm sure you've listened to Animals by PF, or their early Syd Barrett stuff.
Animals is the Pink Floyd Album on vinyl I want the most, but it hasn't been reissued yet. It's so cleche' to just have Dark Side of the Moon too. Meddle is also on my list and of course Pipers at the gates of dawn, which is common but not cheap and I have no idea if vinyl reissues are coming or not. I'm not sure about King Crimson, Progressive and Psychedelic blend together indistinguishably sometimes. Like the Flaming lips, people consider them Psychedelic but I think of them as Progressive/experimental.
In the new category, there's Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It's more noisy than the 70's stuff though. Well worth taking the time to learn to appreciate it. Yes, GoH, your name reminded me of that band.
I....don't know.........but somebody can trip to that that's for sure. On that Criteria I think we can count it. Frank Zappa comes up in these discussions. Sadly the new Album moves away from Psychadellia but I LOVE Tame Impalla's last album Lonerism. When I want Psychadellic rock I want tracks that sound like this.
