Im trying to get a backup copy of nba hoopz running. i have all my cd burned games from like 2002 and they all boot fine. I also burned the utopia boot cd and that worked, but it still wouldnt boot any of the new games. Ive put the laser pot in every single position it could ever be in. Ive tried discjuggler, imgburn, alcohol 120, nero burning rom, and even with mds/mdf files. Ive tried thousands of tutorials but eveyrtime the disk just kinda speeds up for a second, then slows down, then speeds up again and over and over and makes clicking noises

Maybe your laser has gone to a better place, or you broke it fiddling with the pots, or you're using horrible low quality media etc etc it could be any number of things

I'm not sure this is really the place to ask about burning backups though :/

Have you tried switching your backups to the more reliable data/data format? It takes a little work your first time but in minutes you can have a converted image that is a lot more stable and reliable even in those pesky problematic systems like the one you speak of as I have one like that myself. My very first system I re-acquired and will not let it go thought despite new lasers and all it isn't a fan of the audio/data retail backups. Converted to data/data they work like a charm all day long without skipping a beat, Drop m a PM and I can help you.

Sounds like the motor is catching to me... Also when the laser starts to die, this is a sign... From what you're describing it as.
    Tried a GD-ROM?

He said that all his old burnt discs boot fine. I'd try a bit for bit copy from one of the working burned discs, as Mystical said. If that boots then I imagine there's something wrong with the backup you've made of NBA Hoopz.

I have this same problem, with data/data as well as with audio/data. I believe it's related to the quality/color of the cd-r. Silver cd-r seems to works better in my console, cyan one works ok and dark/blue ones works sometimes. It helps to catch a voodoo spell on your gd-rom unit.

I had a Dreamcast that eventually only booted one game myself. After 4 years of heavy use from a series of games burnt on the same exact type of discs (Memorex), it would only boot a copy of Sonic Adventure 2 that I had. I'm guessing that it was only because I had played that specific copy a lot more than the other games I had at the time.

Considering that you've used those same discs for over 10 years, I think that the laser is so used to reading them at this point that it may not have the ability to adjust for versatility. CD-Rs do wear out the laser, too. I've seen it firsthand twice now, and ever since I started buying GD-Rs (or, at least switching between the two), I've been on the same exact Dreamcast, which continues to work even today!

You must be burning them wrong them if the old CD-R's boot. They must be self bootable remember, and be sure to choose a slow burn speed, and use good quality CD-ROM's!

Could be the brand of CD-R's if you switched, could also be the burner if you've switched that though that's far less likely. Remember when you burn with DiscJuggler to change to burning mode to Mode 2.

As far as I remember, Type A modems allow for the Dreamcast to go online without a proper landline setup. I think it involves hooking the Dreamcast up to a PC through 56k and the PC to ethernet.

get some MAM-A CD-Rs Gold and I bet you will have no problems or you could also try DataLifePlus AZO CD-Rs.
