I have one of the big original gameboys and I just took it out to use it after not using it for years. At first, it would try to display the nintendo logo and make the start up sound but the logo was garbled. I figured maybe the batteries were just old cause I found them lying around the house. Now, it's not even doing as much as before. Nothing shows up? Any ideas for an easy remedy?

When that happened to me, I just "threw air with force" (??) at the cart connector and at the cartridge pins, and it worked. I've been doing that since I'm 5. And still do it. xD

Not to be nasty, but maybe buy a used working one for $5 and swap the insides.

I would also try the "throwing with force"

If theres lines missing from the screen it might be due to the connectors on the lcd coming loose.

Failing that, with cart based systems if you dont play them for a bit the pins on both the connector & the carts get a layer of oxidisation, obviously depends on enviroment but it happens eventually.

    Try cleaning the contacts.

It is just a garbage on your cart contacts. Just take the cart out and clean the contacts and then try it again. This happened with all Gameboys/NDS.

Buy a GBA SP, much better for playing the original Gameboy games ;-)

Definitely sounds like dirty contacts. If you've been blowing in the gameboy also, most likely those contacts are oxydized too. Just give it a good cleaning.
