As the title points out, random freezing is a problem I'm having with an old version white Xbox 360. The system boots up fine and displays all dashboard elements correctly. Upon booting up a game (i.e. Grand Theft Auto IV,) the game plays normally for roughly 2-4 minutes. Then at random times the system either freezes once and completely locks up or does a quick freeze, continues with gameplay for 1-2 seconds then completely locks up. No option to return to dashboard, no error message, no red ring, nothing but a straight freeze. I've cleared out the system cache, reformatted the hard drive, installed the game, tried the game without the hard drive, taken the casing off the system and blown out everywhere possible, etc. Nothing seems to be helping. Just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar issue and what could be done to fix it. Thanks for the time, everyone. I really appreciate it.
remove the heatsinks and replace the thermal paste (google for instructions), if that doesn't fix it throw it away.
I will be grabbing a few games for testing from my home soon. Any games that would be better than others? I assume besides GTA V the majority would be fine. What type of behavior should I look for in particular? I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but then again I wasn't looking with much scrutiny. I will retry with more games than GTA IV. I will be picking up some thermal paste in a bit. Thanks for the speedy replies, everybody! I appreciate it. EDIT: So I've tested a few games. The original DOOM from the DOOM 3: BFG Edition works fine, as does DOOM 3. In addition, both Dead or Alive 4 and Quake II from the 360 version of Quake 4 work satisfactory. After testing these games, I tried GTA IV and it locked up faster than any other time before. I will be purchasing some thermal paste tomorrow, so I will post the results from using that. Thanks again for the help, everyone.
I am not 100% sure, but i thoughed that it was the ram chips. I really hate this error, and give on this one. but check it out, if you can somebody too do a cheap reflow of the ram/gpu chips.
So you cleared the hdd cache? try a factory restore failing that reinstall the dash board. some of the older consoles have internal memory iirc that caould be the issue. depending on your dash, install the game to the hdd. you could have a dud disc, scratches aren't the only thing that can break a cd
