This cd turned up in a stack of other game soundtracks. Only thing is this one is for an Atari ST game and the cd is dated 1989!
Any others out there dated before this one?

I'm sure I have one dated from 1986, I'll go and dig it up later.

You can have a look at this page: http://kosiro.hp.infoseek.co.jp/gmh/gmh_f.htm

On the left side you can select the year to see the soundtracks released in this year. Though these are japanese releases only it should give you an idea of what has been released :)

As for european Releases (as this appears french), it is definitely an early release. Don't know if there was an earlier one right now. I've found some from 1992,93 etc, but I'm not too sure, as I'm at work right now and I can't look after that properly :p

Why yes there are earlier soundtracks, released on vinyl in Japan. Sadly hardly any game OST's are available on vinyl nowadays :-(

Was any game soundtrack been released on Vinyl since the early 90s?

My holy grail is to get a game soundtrack on AHD format, I know that at least 4 exist.

Yeah, Rez, actually - and a few Western games. I recall seeing a Splinter Cell soundtrack LP set in NYC, if memory serves.

I have 2 of them. They were given away as press promos. I think one was "Starsky and Hutch" the other was some ps2 game but don't quote me on the titles. I'll show pixs whenever they pop up (could be years from now thou)

For some reason I have a feeling that you could hire 5 guys to sort through your stuff for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week and it would still take at least two years to get through everything...

AFAIK, "Video Game Music" was the first released videogame soundtrack (April, 1984), on vinyl. It featured music from several different Namco games - produced by Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra. :)

The number of albums released increased every year from then.

The earliest CD I got is THE BEST OF VIDEO GAME MUSIC 32XA-66 by Alfa Music from 1986.

Contains soundtracks from various 80s Namco games, although most do seem to be someone playing the game and some of the music sounds from the game. It's a decent mix of Video Game Music Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 which were available on vinyl during 1983 and 1985.

However it does contain a nice YMO flavoured Galaga theme music, a Xevious trace made from samples of the game and the Pole Position fanfare done with a synth, but apart from that it's pretty poor.

I saw an SNK 12" vinyl at Mandarake the other day. Had a screen grab of Ikari Warriors on the cover. The only game vinyl I own is the PS Ghost in the Shell soundtrack, and it is the bomb diggety.

the lastest offical Gamemusic Vinyl Release should be the Air Analog Collector's Edition, which was released in May 2006:

Beside some other earlier ones there was also at least 1 Doujingame Soundtrack on Vinyl.

Buyatari: I dont know about those promo Vinyl records, It would be very cool if you can give me some more information :) Gamemusic is my biggest hobby, u know :p

d_liquid: It did not increase EVERY year as far as I know. Where do you have that info from?

I'll dig out the promos. They are very cool. One is one of the LPs is a red. Might be Starky and Hutch but I can't tell you as I haven't owned a record player in many many years.

So what are the early CD release soundtracks outside of Japan?

I honestly have no idea what the other record was. All I know for sure is that one was Starsky and Hutch and that I have atleast 1 other promo record.
