I have had this wii forever, and havent really touched it, I usually use my other(hardmod)wii. so its virgin 3.2U. But as with following some soft modding vids, you gain some features and loose others. I want the ultimate wii.
I would like sdhc, motionplus, ability to play dvd's, vc games(backups), skyward sword(the actual game is fine)..etc... I just want the most badass wii possible, no feature loss. If you softmodders out there were handed this to mod, what would you do? I just dont want to do with my last wii(i updated and lossed my multi region, from a tutorial).

You do not lose any features.... where did you get that idea from?

4.2 and 4.3 removed region from from modchips. Softmodding is still region free.

The best system menu is 4.1 as it was the latest system menu that actually added anything. 4.2 and 4.3 were anti modding updates.

4.0 added SDHC support, launch channels on an SD card and download stuff from the shop to sd card.

4.1 were fixes to motion plus and new sd card features added in 4.0

In all, 4.1 is the best system menu.

However - "if its not broke, dont fix it"

I made quite a lot of money unbricking Wiis people had screwed up (remove nand, reflash, refit)

So you need 4.1 for motion plus? oh no I need to go through all the hacking stuff again and upgrade for Skyward Sword when I get it. The last time I hacked a wii I used the Twilight Hack. good times.

4.1 you can just use bannerbomb.

All you do is copy files to SD card, then goto data management and select the sd card. It will then load the hackmii installer.

However, you will not need 4.1 for motion plus. With how the Wii works, the system menu is never running while a game is playing.

Worst case you will need to update your hacked cIOS (or original IOS if you are running from original disc).

Before you do anything, install bootmii to boot2, install homebrew channel, make a backup of your NAND. From there on you can upgrade if you like, experiment and if anything goes wrong you can restore your NAND back to 3.2 and it will still be a virgin (other than messing with bootmii and hbc)
That's what I'd do anyway, but up to you :)

If he installs bootmii as boot2 now, then updates to 4.1/4.2 boot2 will get overwritten with boot2v4 (and you will lose bootmii).

Id probably install HBC, then install boot2v4 from dopmii, then install bootmii. This way it cant be overwritten and you can mess about without fear of killing it.

Get Priiloader, it's in the Letterbomb package.
I'd say to install all channels, along with an update to 4.3 first before doing anything else (which is needed anyways for this method), the install would downgrade again to 4.1.

Downgrading is a good way to brick your Wii.

4.3 would install a stubbed IOS60, if you downgrade to 4.1 without first removing the stubbed IOS60 and then installing the correct version, the console would brick.

Much better to update to 4.1 and then update any needed IOS's manually.

You can then just use bannerbomb, which is easier than letterbomb.

    ***Update***
    I did indiana pwns hack
Installed bootmii on the boot2, although I can't get it to work for the life of me, it does the double blink showing that it's installed, but bootmii won't start.
    Installed needed ios for 4.1 upgrade(through dop-mii)

Came to a crossroads though, with nand emulation: sneek vs wiiflow/ShowMiiWads vs mighty channels vs whatever else. I haven't found any comprehensive compatibility guides or comparative reviews.

I want to have the most compatibility with the least amount of hassle.

I assume Bootmii has been updated for the newer wiis? because when I tried to install it back in the day it turns out my Wii was incompatible.

In that case, I don't need to update from 3.2E, as I have all the features I need XD

Bootmii will install on boot2v4 (latest boot2). But only if your Wii has the vulnerable boot1 (so made before early 2008).

Otherwise, you are stuck with bootmii as an IOS.

The wii I have was one of the first wiis (I bought it in the january after it was launched)
bootmii said it was successful in installing to boot2 but I tried running it, with no avail. I assume when I updated to 4.1 through dopmii that it erased it. Either that or I have no idea how to access it.

    Letterbomb only works on 4.3

4.3 is not the ideal system menu. 4.1 can use bannerbomb, which is even easier than letterbomb.

you just need the bootmii folder on sd card, then have the sd card inserted when you power up the wii.

FYI: Letterbomb automatically sets to 4.1 per default (part of the package)
I was not making this up for a brick, why you...

Letterbomb doesn't do anything for 4.1...

Letterbomb is an exploit that launches an app, sounds like you are talking about a package that installs something after the letterbomb exploit - but that isn't what you said.

Letterbomb launches the hackmii installer by default. Which doesnt downgrade anything.

But, 90% of all bricks I have repaired (and its in the hundreds) have been from downgrading. Ignore my advice if you like, I don't really care - but facts are facts.

DUDE: Look for Letterbomb and the according packages offered.
It DOES downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1. I'm not saying you need a downgrade, I'm just saying it does that. See? Anyways... I think I got misunderstood, otherwise you'd have read that it's for 4.3, which I clearly said.
