You want to hear a story about public schools in the US try this. I might have told this one before a long time ago so if you've heard it then bare with me. When I was in junior high there was a history class that had a teacher who was notorious for being worthless and not giving a shit. I'm pretty cynical and even I didn't believe it was as bad as some people said. Well sure enough the next year I got him it was just as bad as they said. His class I shit you not consisted solely of crossword puzzles and the movie Glory and all he did was sit around and chat with students. He would actually let student he liked write their own grades in the grade book. It was literally the picture of a class out of control. My semester basically consisted of 5 to 10 minutes of crossword puzzles and sitting and doing nothing the rest of the time. There really anything else to do but say screw it and collect an easy A. After all how can you get anything else but an A if you actually complete the puzzle? Well somehow I managed to since I got a B at the end of the semester. Needless to say I was pissed. The next semester guess what class I get again? This time around (partly out of a personal experiment but mostly because I didn't give a fuck) I didn't do one piece of work for that class. Hell, I doubt I attended more than two weeks the entire semester. I spent my time at lunch for that period or reading in the library. When the Librarian finally caught on and asked where I supposed to be I told her and explained that I felt my time would be better served here. She understood and agreed not to rat me out. You can guess what grade I got at the end of the semester? That experience taught me two things. 1. Public schools in this country were for the most part broken and are in need of a major overhaul. 2. The teachers unions have way too much power in this country to the point of being detrimental to the quality of education.
The Invention of the Light Bulb : (what a kinky colour ;-) ) http://www.enchantedlearning.com/inventors/edison/lightbulb.shtml Humphry Davy, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan , Charles Francis Brush , and then finally Thomas Alva Edison .But there are more in that link.
Well, my point about the hot girl was that there are certain things that should be common knowledge. I just used those items above becasue they're examples of simple stuff that everyone should know (even if it is true that other people actually invented them, but that is going above and beyond "common" knowledge.) There's no reason why the average product of the public school system shouldn't know basic things like who invented the airplane and when, or who the last Emperor of Japan was or the name of the American president and British PM during WWII, or even how far away the sun is, what a comet is, how many planets there are, etc. This isn't hard shit that requires years of study, these are simple, basic facts. It's pretty shameful that kids aren't even up to this level. The sun is 93 million miles away, btw. But anyway, I have to agree that most of my public school experience past 6th grade is pretty close to what A. Snow describes. Once in a while there would be a "real" teacher, who actually cared. But the majority of them were crabby dried up old bitches who didn't give a fuck about anyone and seemed to actually take joy in making your life a living hell. Just as I said, they're not really interested in "educating" anyone, if you want it you need to do it yourself.
When I got out of normal school in 5. grade, there I didn´t stop learning, I just learned in other ways. And I remember when I was at a place from I was 13/14 till I was 18, there the first thing my teacher asked me about was, if I wanted to read an illustrated science, or a Donald Duck Magazine or a Beetle Bailey I was like "sorry don´t I have to do homework etc. ?" And she said "not really you do what you want , but you will be at the school 4 hours a day, and I was like "sweet heavens , this is a paradise !" , so I "slagged" off for about two years. But in reality I didn´t. I just learned in other ways than most people, since I learned what I wanted to learn. So even it looked like I was just doing nothing and just playing PSX, N64 ,C64 (on a C128) and played games on PC , then I learned alot in other ways. Since I hadn´t lost the joy of learning, or education for that matter. In reality, I was being healed emotionally while I "took a break from school". Since I had been through hell, before I came there.
