Right this has been getting on my nerves for some time now. basically I'm trying to decide what to do. the console I like most is the N64 and have various stuff fron this including various colour consoles doctor v64 and about 100 boxed games and many loose things? aswell as Atari jaguar console , sega Saturn , dreamcast , Snes , new , ps1 , ps2 , original xbox , gamecube and other bits. im toying withe the idea of basically selling it all apart from my gamecube and N64 lot. as I only live in a small 2 bed apartment with my son and girlfriend. and none of it is on display apart from my collectible sand xbox 360 collection. my girlfriend says keep it and build it up. but I would be much happier with a whole N64 collection that bits and bobs scattered all over the place. has anybody ever been in the situation and what would your advice be? i do have some rare and not so rare stuff that I could sell. loke blue de bug ps1 with some rare games , never used Snes. i often regret selling things but I collect and paint model kits and I collect various film and video game statues , walkthroughs and promo items too. advice would be great and would it be better to sell individual or as lots as I don't want to be left with the common stuff and people just buy the rare stuff. and I don't really want to go through eBay either and video game company's prices are just terrible to what they actually sell them for. thanks in advance and sorry about the rant.
If you think you'd enjoy a big single console collection more than various small collections, go for it Everyone has different goals and understands collecting in different ways. Do whatever makes you feel better
You don't have to rush into it. Rather, you could start selling some of the stuff you have and put it toward the stuff you want. Basically, recycling the money you've already put into the scattered collection into items that make your collection more console specific. For example, I had an atari jaguar lying around in my basement that I bought on a whim 10 or so years ago. I knew that I never played it, and that I didn't enjoy the games on it. I sold it and used the money to buy dreamcast stuff. I don't regret it. But by selling things piece by piece, game by game, you not only tend to make more money - but you also have an easier time if you decide you want to stop what you're doing and go back to having lots of different consoles and items and maybe you get a better idea of your priorities in terms of which consoles and games you would like to keep. Another question to consider - Your present circumstances are one thing - but do you expect you will move into a larger place sometime soon? Maybe the next 5 or 10 years? Does this picture interest you? There is nothing wrong with a collection scattered across multiple consoles with a handful of games each. Ask yourself why you have these other systems and why you are dissatisfied with them now. Is it the games? Or is it that you want to have things displayed in a nicer less cluttered fashion? There are still ways to display partial collections that will make them look good and sophisticated and intentional rather than just a pile of games and hardware with wires sticking everywhere.
Here's my 2 cents. You get more money selling piece by piece... but it takes a long time to do. You get less money by selling it bundles, but since you can get rid of everything in one sale it takes much much less time to deal with. IMO, I think if you are on the fence you should just keep the stuff. (I might be a little biased though as my collection is a black hole, once a game or console enters it, it never escapes.)
I love the pic with the stuff displayed and that is my dream. but I doubt it will ever happen for me. basically I live in a 2 bed flat with my 5 year old and girlfriend , and I have filled the spare cupboard with my stuff and the spare room also with my stuff were I airbrush and paint model kits and statues for people. I know what will happen as I need to get it all together for a full inventory but I get attached to stuff. i remember when the ps3 came out I traded in my n64 and gamecube lot and I really regretted it so I started collecting again. thanks for the advice everyone
I personally focus on being able to play the games I love. I too have limited space, our den is 7 feet by 7 feet and has a pull-out couch in it, so very little room to spare. I built this unit out of an old clothing display from the store I work at, it cost me nothing except the time I spent on it. I used to do home theatre install so I know how to keep wiring to a minimum (the one wire you see going to the TV is actually a Nintendo composite I was using to test something, everything else is in the wall). For the cartridge machines I have flashcarts, every other console except the 360 has some kind of modding done to it. Whilst I do own original games for all the systems, I also have a lot of backups (save your opinions for another thread) and in the case of the original XBOX, I have installed a 320GB HDD which contains all the best XBOX games and hundreds of emulated 8 and 16-bit and arcade games. If you look closely you can see another external HDD that contains the good Wii games (lots of space left on that one). There is a small closet to the left of the room where I keep the remaining games, controllers and peripheral crap. I don't have too much physical eye-candy, but as I have mentioned elsewhere, collecting doesn't really interest me anymore (used to have huge collections over several systems), I'm all about the games these days. One last thing, the TV on the wall is level, it's just the floors in my 100 year old house that aren't!
I sold a lot of my loose games and platinums and bought systems and games that I wanted. It worked out really good in the end, so I suggest you that man
I love your set up , I also have a modded original xbox with no games on it yet. is that an everdrive unit on the n64? do they come with the game pre loaded? As I'm useless at downloading. last time I downloaded was in 1998 on napster. also what do the games play like on emulators! Are they as good as the original as I'm told turok 2 and body harvest font work that well
Good eyes. Yes it is an Everdrive, it doesn't emulate games, it loads a ROM image into a chip on a PCB that the N64 recognizes as an original game, It's just like playing the games on original hardware, and it plays 99% of all known N64 games perfectly. It doesn't come loaded with games, you'll have to figure that out on your own, but the word "goodset" is important .
Yeah I may do that , my most nostalgic consoles are the ps1 and N64 as they are the ones I first owned. but I don't want to go into collecting ps1 as I could be forever. and I doubt I will ever complete a full N64 collection as snowboard kids 2 and Starcraft 64 silly money prices.
Yeah that sounds great to me as the xbox does not seem to play them very well but I still need to add coin ops 5 to it as I have that on 10 discs .
From one scouser yo another, your best bet is going for many different systems. Why, well because you end up with an awful lot of crap on one system if you don't. I love the Sega Saturn and own 99% of every Japanese release for it. Yeah, my collection looks fantastic but do I like all of the games, No. Did I basically waste a shit load of cash? YES. You see a complete collection is only cool for a while until you see how much space it takes and just how much you don't actually care for half of the stuff. Do yourself a favour and buy games you actually want on consoles you like. I have healthy collections for the Mega Drive, Super Famicom, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox 360 and now PlayStation 2. None are complete apart for the Saturn but I'm very happy with what I have and I know I'll get use and enjoyment out of them rather than some display that I will never use and not many people will actually ever see in real life.
I agree with the user above. You look at some things and think, why in heaven I need this... Oh, for the sake of completion, of course... ¬¬ Also, if you sold your itens to buy ps3, you are not that "attached to stuff", imo, and already know the feeling. I would stick to something that I would never sell. Specially to buy "brand new stuff!!!" I think you will sell again in the future... so why bother...
Well I sold the stuff to get a ps3 as I was in foster care and had no room sold traded it in and regretted it ever since. i do get very attached to things.
Hahaaaaa good to hear from another scouser. yeah I totally agree with you on this , as I hate sports games and football games especially. i have always wanted the mk1 mega cd for some reason never saw one in the flesh or played on one. i think I'm going to stick with your advice and not try and complete all collections but just buy the games I like/liked.
I sold out most of my super famicom games, bought a flachcart for it, left only the games with special chips and collect only those practically mint in box etc. I also think that having a big display of different colored gameboy advance consoles is a sweet thing. I've got 4 gba's now(white with tvout, orange, purple, black), planning to get some limited editions now(chobits, japanese toys'r'us or the clea orange/black). It really does feel better to have a bigger 1-item related collection, than a couple of smaller collections. edit: Also, this: That's why I bought a ds, gba and sfc flashcart, dumped the games I owned and only collect those that don't run on flashcarts, but they gotta be CIB mint/nmint
