Well it does stop people who play pirate games (and probably have potty mouth anyway) from going online. Although it does ask questions about people who buy second hand games.

Oh, Sony. I am glad that we can always trust in you for lack of consumer awareness and rabid love of screwing paying customers.

Nintendo may have an anti-social online, but I've never had to input a code to play Mario Kart...

I get why studios are doing this but I'm not a huge fan of the idea (was more favorable of it on psp to hold back pirates from the online and games where only $30/40 anyways).

Oh well if anybody is smart they just hold it out a month or two and can get new games for $40 and under. =/

I've never played a PS3 game online and probably never will.

It would be pretty annoying, if you did want to play a game online, to get a used copy and find that you're unable to do that.

You're not entirely bared. You just have to buy the online pass from the store. Still is rather annoying (many 3rd party publishers are already on the banwaggon for both platforms).

I refuse to buy games with Online passes Mortal Kombat was the ONLY exception. So far it seems only greedy American publishers are doing this

Looks like Sony permanently lost my business.

To be honest i don't like this online pass crap, ever since it started from EA. It was never aimed towards reducing piracy, but to make profit from the used game market.

In a few months EA made profits of over $10 million, not counting DLCs. LINK

I think they're going to piss a lot of people off with this, especially in these financially tight times. Though I guess it rather depends on the price of the codes from the playstation market. Who's going to want to buy a game for £5 then have to pay another £20 to play it online, just not going to happen. If they start doing this with xbox games, I guess I'll not bother to pay for live again lol. Only about 3 of my current gen games were new when I bought them

Uh, some companies (EA at least) are already doing it, and have been for a while now.

I know that, I'm not an idiot :p
I haven't bought an EA game in years and I deliberately don't buy them for that reason (among others)
I meant if they did this across the board for all games as sony is proposing

Hehe (some here are going to love this), Actually I think sony was the first to start it and they did it on the PSP with a few releases (I think modnation racers portable was the first). But really back then it wasn't a bad proposition for those buying new as most PSP online games are totally destroyed by pirates/hackers. Since then it really has taken on a life of squeezing money out of those who buy used games. =(

EA use the online pass to put both small (Charity/thrift shops) and Large (Gamestop) out of business. Effectively kills used game sales (of which EA's 2k line is a big seller) Never was to reduce piracy whatsoever in my opinion. EA have their own store now too.

This true. I read online that in this current gen, used game sales are a bigger threat to developers than piracy. If you think about it, its kinda true in that games are passed on, an the developers dont get income from the 2nd or 3rd users.

I completely disagree with the way these companies are handling this situation though, and is upsetting to me that sony is doing this now. I planned on buying uncharted 3 at launch but i've changed my mind now, about this and many other games. Ill wait until prices drop, even if it takes more than a year.

That is an absolute joke. I would be willing to bet most game sales are partially from store credit (AS A RESULT OF TRADING IN GAMES TO GET MONEY TO BUY THE NEW FUCKING GAMES.)

These dipshits don't realise the sales are great now. Outlaw used games and watch your sales drop.
