Hi, Sorry to make a couple threads within a couple of days but just wondered the method and the best way to open a sidecar to get to the HDD? Never opened one before and sneaky peanuts photos are down in the tear down thread. Thanks
It has been awhile, but the hard part is really just getting the bottom separated from the top. Grab an old giftcard/creditcard/etc and make sure it's something you won't use again as I guarantee it's going to get a little bendy and fucked up. Wedge it in between the bottom casing and the top casing near one of the front clips, and try to slide it towards the front of the Sidecar. if you're doing it right, the length of the creditcard or w/e should be entirely between the two casings, and bending around the front curve. The tricky part is popping the tab at the front of the casing. The credit card should give you enough leverage to separate the two casings and dislodge the tab without fucking up the casing. It's still a huge pain in the ass though. -Doom
Appreciate that mate! Got it out now, but bent two cards in the process haha, they were scrap worthy anyway. Now, actually removing the HDD itself? I don't want to be rough with that either, so hows it best done? Thanks again.
Because of how MS mounted the hdd with screws underneath the top board you will need to remove it to access them. The four screws holding the top board in should be easy to spot. I believe its either torx 14 or 15? I cant remember of the top of my head apologies. After the screws are removed note there are two connections to the board that need to be carefully removed. One is a wired and the other a riser connection. Carefully remove those connections to free the top board. After that you should have access to the screws securing the hdd. I believe these screws are torx 12. After that you can slide the hdd out of its connection. Note there should be two plastic slips under the hdd so its not resting on the board. Sorry if thats not very helpful... I wish I had taken pics the last time I opened my kit as to help whenever something like this comes up.
Thanks mate. But worked it out from sneakypeanut's guide to take it apart first, but turns out two of the first screws to take the boards apart are like rounded / stripped. I'm taking it into work tomorrow to see if theres anything better there to remove them. I've already tried the paper and elastic band methods.
