Well, basically some of the guys from team twiizers and the iphone dev team decided to start a side project building an open source USB sniffer device into the hands of the amateur hacking hobbyist. The idea is that they will make the blueprints, designs, firmwares, protocols and basically everything open source, while keeping the cost low. To get the funds to begin this project they started a project on kickstarter to raise the funds. Their initial goal was $17,500 in one month. In less than a week they beat that goal and as of right now they have over $44k pledged with still 20 days to go. The way kickstarter works it, to reward those who invested in a project and helped bring it to life, the donators get certain rewards. Anyways, I don't want tor amble too much, but here it is. You can check out all the information about their product, and the donation tiers at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bushing/openvizsla-open-source-usb-protocol-analyzer I'm definitely considering getting one for my birthday so I might even go the $250 route.
Founding ended back in December. They just received their revised prototype a few week ago. The project will see the light of day. But it's in no way something fast to design. Once the hardware done you need to write the HDL for it and then once this is done you need to write the PC software to use it. So it's going to take time.
