I want to get back into gaming with a few RPGs on my Mega CD 2 and the battery is well and truly knackered (not surprised since it was my original one I bought back in the 1995 when they were being priced to clear).

I know I can swap like for like or add in a standard CR2032 in its place, but I'm keen for something long lasting. A while ago (can't remember where though), I read a report on the various battery options for the Saturn, including something I think they referred to as a super capacitor (which I'm assuming is just a crazy battery that would suit the needs of internal memory voltage requirements on the machine).

With this in mind, what's the best option for whacking in a replacement battery? If the super capacitor option is something I could go for, can anyone recommend a component that would do the job? The machine will only be on short bursts, so I thought a non-recharchable but more heavy duty battery might be better for the situation.

Apologies if this has already been discussed - I did a quick search but probably used the wrong keywords.

Typically CR2032 will last many years. So unless you absolutely can't lose save games 10 or so years later, stick with the battery.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I'll look at replacing with a CR2032 and see if I can grab a backup cart to take care of long-term storage then, same as the Saturn when you think about it! Out of interest, I normally just grab Energiser CR2032s from the supermarket (convenience :p) - are there any brands gamers recommend for long life/reliability?

I realise it's probably a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask anyways!

Use a ML2032 as Bart said, CRxxxx is non-rechargeable.

Myself I used a vertical battery holder, laid over (it is what I had laying around - typically I use it for Dreamcasts) with a ML2032 battery instaleed. If/when it dies, it is a simple matter of removing it and fitting a new one.

would be nice to have something long lasting / rechargable, for the saturn i normally just swap out the battery from computer motherboards i have lying around (yes im a cheapo but its recycling!) would be interesting to see if an xbox 360 controller battery pack could be used and also charged by the console << a bit of a mental idea but could be possible

Cool, will do - will grab one for the DC as well to get them both sorted, as the vertical holders look like a nice option!

With the vertical holder please note that i laid it over. Again it is what i had laying around. Using a horizontal mount would be a better option.

Why do people keep saying the originals aren't long lasting? Lithium batteries are DESIGNED to be long lasting in low consumption applications. How many times have you had to change the battery on your motherboard, and how old is it?

Use whatever the original battery was - it'll last a good 10 years.

well my pc is constantly connected to a power source and used daily pretty much, not everyone keeps their consoles connected all the time with regular use, have had to change saturn batteries etc certainly not lasting 10 years anyway.

My parent's computer (Compaq brand, before HP took over C) used CR2032 battery for CMOS data. In the 8 years they've had it, I had to replace that battery 4 times. Every time, the clock starts going wrong and ending up reset to 1985, setting lost, etc and every time I checked the battery, it was less than 1v. Quality battery such as Energizer brand, not some cheap junk yet it went dead too soon.

It could be the computer itself (specifically the mobo and CMOS memory) were poorly designed or there was a minor short that drained the battery prematurely.

Sega VMU is also battery guzzler.
