I've just stuck a sata 1tb drive into my original xbox, with a sata to ide adapter.

Ended up having to use a 80 wire ide cable, instead of the original 40, or I got an error 13, weird?

    Anyway!

The xbox set up a few smaller partitions for the operating system and stuff, plus a 120gig, and then X, Y and Z I think, are all listed as 750meg?

    hmm, not very helpful!

Anyway! how do I make use of this whole drive? How do I set it up?
I've searched, but sadly, with all the xboxes being called xbox, I find instructions for every console!

    Thanks! ^_^

You have to go into your settings and enable the F and G drives. And you need the 80 pin cable for anything over like 800 gigs.

    Cheers.
Enable G, format G, now with 820gig free!

Why does the xbox divide the drive up in such a way? I have an F partition thats 120gig?

I'm not really sure, maybe something to do with how it handles large capacity drives!

Don't you find it super slow with such a large SATA drive in it?

actually should be faster, the newer HDD's have more buffer memory, i have a 250gb sata drive with 16mb buffer memoy. the old xbox HDD has 2mb buffer.

Nothing to do with the buffer... I find it TERRIBLY slow with a SATA interface and a large drive. Like, IIRC, it took a good 2 minutes to boot. Tried several SATA drives. Took them out, put the original (still modded) drive back in - boots instantly!

Were all your SATA drives with 4k sectors?

It was a few years ago now, but I probably still have it all. I'll have to check. Do you think that's the issue, then?

Perhaps the data was unaligned. Such drives will only performe optimally if data is read in multiples of its sector size and at LBAs that are aligned to its sector size.

I have a 2tb drive, nothing special, 4k sectors etc. i'd take about 20 seconds to boot up.... The longest wait was loading the game list.

The modchip I was using is called the x-chip. It required you to select the bank to boot off of right at startup. So perhaps this gave my drive spool up time etc. I literally just tsop a box last night and I plan on putting my 2tb drive in that. So perhaps my boot times will go to shit. I'll let you know...

Mine is an Xecuter 3 with the front plate. Off the top of my head, it's running EvoX with XBMC on top. I'll have to dig it out and have a play!
