Hi I have an original Xbox I haven't played in years, but when I last played it, its DVD drive seemed to be starting to go wrong. Also, I wish to take a few measures in prolonging the console's life. All details in this video Thank you
I did open up the console this week, and most likely because I used the console on a regular basis from 2002-2011 (stopped using it due to concerns that the DVD drive may be giving out), the clock capacitor is NOT leaking! I do still have a replacement one on order from Poland, although in the video I stated I didn't want to mod the console, I decided to, so I bought a mod kit on ebay (Splinter Cell, specific USB stick with files, adaptor cable), dad'll install a wire into the console for the TSOP mod, this only leaves the question as to which Compact Flash-HDD adaptor I need so I can replace the console's hard drive with a Compact Flash, and where can I buy a new DVD drive? I know you can replace it with a Samsung 616T as long as you flash it with the 605 firmware, but I have no idea how to do that!
I've found that usually it's just cheaper to buy another console than to replace the DVD drive unfortunately. And even though it isn't leaking now, it could in the future and the thing's probably dead anyways. Those caps were a silly choice over a traditional CR2032 like every other console does on Microsoft's part.
To cut the cost, M$ decided to use the RTC of the MCPX chip instead of implementing a real time clock dedicated chip. Due to that decision, A CR2032 which is not chargable would only keep time for a couple of months. If the 1 Farad goldcap capacitors would have been reliable components, it would not be considered a silly choice. Make sure your Compact Flash-HDD adapter supports DMA transfer (and your Compact Flash card must support it as well) I have seen many rechargable batteries that started to leak as well. The damage to a pcb of those is even worse.
