Thanks for the Samsung tip. On another matter, I'm also curious to know about the softmod options - just for interest sake as I have a few consoles and wouldn't mind trying a few things. My basic understanding is that there are 3 games that can be used to load files just the way we need but so I'm looking at using Splinter Cell. My question is:
Did they 'fix'this in Splinter cell when it was rereleased as an XBOX classic game? If I try a softmod too, I just want to make sure I don't buy a game that won't work in this way.

Just did a quick google and people on various forums have confirmed that the classics version works, so you shouldn't have any problem with it. I'd imagine you should be able to pick either copy fairly cheap off ebay or such?

You need the ORIGINAL Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. The one with the silver letters for game title. No purple disk, special edition, ect. Those don't work. I can put picture up if needed since I have the game. No, I'm not selling it...
Or my memory card with the files to do soft mod either...

To copy the softmod exploit files on the memory card, If you dont know anyone with a working hacked xbox, you will need the memory card usb adapter and it's not compatible with all memory cards.
I had bought a cheap memory card and my neighbor had the action replay usb adapter, but i could never get it to work with my memory card.
I ended up using an already hacked xbox to copy the files on my memory card and i can softmod with it now.

Not all mem cards are compatible???? I believe the phrase I'm looking for rhymes with "Clucking Bell"! This really is a shot to the nutsack as the only cheap ones look like no-name brands. To get an action replay kit to Australia from overseas (because nobody here seems to have them) is going to set be back over $30 – for an 8MB piece of kit.... Oh well. Thanks for that – I’ll just fork out for a proper Action Replay kit with the cable converter.

Maybe theres a trick to work with "all" cards. Maybe the problem is software related too, as i was using the Action replay software.
In any case if you can get that modchip to work, you could bypass the need for the adapter and special cards.

You can use the Xplorer 360 to access the memory cards. Works with all known cards AFAIK. As for the adapter cable, well, the Xbox uses USB basically so it's just a matter of getting the pin order correct. Then you could put a USB port on the memory card and go from there. Or replace one of the memory card ports with a USB port and use flash drives up to 4GB.

Yes that would work. it is basically like what I said about taking a extra breakaway cable the plug end that plugs into the console and splicing in the usb adapter. It would be alot cheaper then ordering pices since most if not all people have a usb cable to spare. Then it is nothing but a cheap breakaway cable. Only thing that cant be used like it was meant to be afterwards is the breakaway. You controller will still work regular since it is just the breakaway being cut.

here is a link to walk you through it. http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t482-guide-xbox-controller-to-usb-adapter.html

Which to save you a ton of time you can just cut the xbox plug off breakaway strip back the sheathing and the colors will match up. Just splice color to color between the breakaway and the usb cable.

regarding memcards: I used an old USB1.1 64MB flash drive with an adaptor like that and it worked.
And the original Splinter Cell needed for this is not hard to get, got mine for 2,90€ at a local gamestop, they still had tons 2 years ago.
(I think they were happy that someone even bought some old xbox stuff)

I's still say get an SST49LF020A , an appropriate socket and some wire and do a straigt LPC chip mod if you have a revision earlier than 1.3 (from sometime around that it started to get tricky). Google for xbox cheapmod, there are some ways to do this, some nice (with a pinheader on the LPC), some uuuuuugly (soldering the chip directly to the port).

If you don't have any of those games/tools just install NDURE through XBOXHDM.

Oh my gosh, i had forgot about the hot swapping trick. This is actually how i fixed my first Xbox that had a corrupted install.
Not my favourite method, certainly more stressfull for your machines than the savegame exploit or modchip
But it works and i guess its relatively safe if done properly.

My advice is, if you are going to softmod several Xbox, say 3 or more, definitely get the stuff to do the mem card exploit trick. It takes less time and is easier with less chance to screw up than doing hot swap.

When i softmod a Xbox its usually to upgrade the HDD so it can be usef for emulators/media center.

What i do is a use splinter cell save game exploit to lauch SID and retrive the Eeprom key via FTP.

Using the key i create a new HDD with XBOXHDM and install XBMC and all the emulators and stuff.

Finally all thats left is copying all the files you want with FTP. Done quite a bunch of them for friends and friends of friends.
A good Xbox, is a modded xbox.

So have I, it's a great tool. Doesn't always work, but the most best thing to do once you've installed the mod is to backup your EEPROM file and reburn a XBOXHDM image. Then you don't have to hotswap anything.

Memory card exploit is the best way to go though, that's if you have the game. If you don't own a memory card you can buy $6 USB > XBOX adapters from eBay, and copy the files to a memory stick (which I think was mentioned :p). It requires some driver modding or replacing... but if you have an old IDE motherboard, XBOXHDM with NDURE script works great.

If you are modding an original Xbox and it isn't a v1.6, don't bother with a mod chip. Just solder the write lines back and flash the TSOP with your BIOS of choice.

There is no reason to have a mod chip installed in the vast majority of original Xbox systems if you're running homebrew.
