HEy, I've been asked to fix a PS2 for a friend...it wont power up. Now I opened it up and the battery at the side was loose and there is a funky silver thing coming from the power switches (not connected to anything though) Any ideas on what to do? OR at least, a pointer to a place that has suggestions? Thanks in advance, either way
Are you sayhing that the silver ribbon cable connected to the Reset and Eject button weren't connected? If thats the case, thats the problem. If you say that the switch in the back doesn't turn on the red LED AND the Reset and Eject buttons are connected then that means you'll have to check cables inside the PSU switch to make sure its connected to it and that the PSU is connected to the PS2 board.
The cable is disconnected, thats what I meant My problem is that I'm not quite sure where to reconnect it.
Okay, well. I got the cable back in....and got power for a split second! Ten the light faded out. Hopefully this is just another minor problem.....anyone know if this has anything to do with the battery in the PS2? I'm guessing I damaged somethign else when fixing it though.....but hey, any help appreciated EDIT=============================== Yet another update. Power has been restored *yay* But.......The two front switches no longer respond (but the red power LED shows up). This mean the cable is fscked?
ive noticed that on some of those ribbon cables the traces can brake off without much effort. be carefull of forcing it into place. where the ribbon connects to the main board on some of the connectors there is a hinged door that when closed tightens the ribbon down so it cant fall out or shift its position.
Thanks I found the cable problem....its broken at the edge as you suggested. Looks like a new wire is needed......though I have some ideas left
Well, the cable is beyond repair Anyone got one for sale? (I know lik-sang sell them but £5+shipping is alot for one cable, especially for a poor student )
Well, the ribbon cable plugs into some errr... thing, and that thing is soldered to the PCB. That probably means that there'll be soldered pins sticking out on the other side of the PCB, where you can solder to.
There are places in the UK that sell PS2 spares. Look for my reply to the PS2 laser thread in general, or google ;-)
He said solder wires to the BOARD by the way, not the cable. If it was a dodgy thing at the end, I had a way of cutting and stripping the ribbon so it was useable again. Most places sell them for £10 but you can get them for a fiver if you look around ;-) Be careful how you fold it to put it back in - use the original as reference.
