I was just surfing the net and came across this site. It's not about games at all but it is an interesting look at one of the more sobering places on earth.

  2. Holy shit, that girl is exceptionally brave. I find the whole Chernobyl (actually, any nuclear-related accident) thing fairly fascinating, and this has got to be one of the best glimpses into the whole ordeal that I have seen. The broken english was a little tough to follow, but it was really chilling to hear about these places that were frozen in time, things like not being able to walk into the town's graveyard on account of radioactive graphite buried there, or places that she feared to stop for too long. A very interesting but sobering look at the tragedy of radioactive mishaps.

Thanks for that link A.Snow. That was a very interesting read. I wish I could visit there to see what it's like for myself. If only there was a video. After reading that site it's difficuilt to belive just how those people that lived in "Ghost Town" felt :smt022

I actuly read this article on another forum, it is some creppy stuff and gets to you when you realise people HAD to leave everything behind, and thus, leave their lives behind.

As for the radition, she will be fine as long as she sticks to the concrete, grass, trees, inside of buildings all took the radition in, concrete dosent take in radition or let it out (hence the nuclear power station and core at chernobyl) being buried in a concrete tomb. Of course there will be background radtion but not enough to cause her major health problems unless she pitches up tent and decides to live there!!

But the game s.t.a.l.k.e.r is based on something similer to chernobyl, but its also based on a book called stalker where a group of merchinarys go into a forbidden zone to look for a crashed alien craft. Also a 1970's russian film. Also in an artilce in GameTM one of the designers (cant remember if it was farther or grandfarther) family member worked as part of the team to seel chernobyl all those years ago.

But the whole thing, is creepy, Im not weird, but Id love to visit the town. In her article she states its one of the quitest places on earth and it can get to you, to expirence this, in what SHOULD be a lively busy town would be, well, an expirence. And it still goes to show, no matter how much we like to think we know, we still, and will always, make mistakes.

Yeah, that's spooky stuff, eh? Good read, thanks for the link.

That first seen of the movie 12 Monkey's always got to me, kind of the same way this does. I think quiet is always more frightening than loud. Loud is normal (especially when you live in a noise polluted world).

That girl is insane. I would never walk around there in a million years without one of those full body radiation suits. And it looks like she's done that several times.

However, I have to commend her for her bravery in bringing attention to an accident like that. What people don't realise is that something like this could potentially happen at any nuclear reactor. How many nuclear plants do we have in the U.S? Like 500? Imagine 500 ghost towns.

All Chernobyl was, was a series of major screw ups that lead to total meltdown. Now we live with the added danger of some suicidal terrorist crashing a plane into a nuclear plant and causing a disaster like this on purpose. It just blows my mind.

On a releated note, the concrete coffin that encloses the still smouldering nuclear core of the plant (where the rods are) is estimated to fall apart and thus let radiation out again around 2012, which is right around the end of the Mayn Calander. Just a little end-of-the-world-hysteria for you.

Three mile island? I used to live not too far from three mile island. Feel free to get close, it's in a pretty area.

What do you mean by "inside"? Access to the island is highly controlled, and if you tried to go there and picnic, there would be men with guns asking unpleasant questions.

However, there is no problem with the country near TMI. It's mostly farms with some light industry. I would imagine that not an insignificant amount of the food grown here makes it's way to NYC, and you would never know it. I used to live about 3-5 miles away from the entrance not quite a year ago. It was a big scare when it happened, and some radiation was released (enough to raise cancer risks, but not enough to really cause it directly), but very quickly the levels came to be only slightly elevated, and my understanding is that now someone standing at the entrance is probably picking up less radiation than someone standing outside the UN building is.

BTW, the reason I moved wasn't to get away from TMI, but rather to get closer to work.

I couldn't stop reading and looking at her pictures. Obviously she has clearance to enter the area which I assume not just anyone can get. I think it's great that she is interested in sharing what she is able to see there, and her feelings while she is there, aside from just the pleasure of driving her bike fast.

I am more amazed at the people who went back to live and the guards that man the outpost and even the town. I think the old man living there, as well as the other 300 or so surviving returners are the really crazy ones. :Hangman: But still, they are behaving very human. Like she said, stubborn people who would rather go back to thier homes and live/die there. I wonder how I would feel in the same situation? Well, I would leave and go somewhere else, but I have family and friends and a lot to live for. I would hate to leave my radiactive video game collection behind though. :smt009

Man that is some freaky stuff. Just like GaijinPunch said, it reminds me of 12 monkeys.

Yeah, a very interesting and compelling read. You feel like its going on forever, but can't stop!

Sure, its madness, but its her choice. They wouldn't let her in (or out) if it was lethal for her. I'm not saying its good for her.... far from it. Still, I think its great that someone had the courage to get so close and take some marvellous photos. Its been a long time since I've seen pictures that close to the reactor!

All I really want to see is the radioactive glow she talked about, maybe she should throw some thing inside that magic wood, and let that thing shine and take a pic for us all to see. She said that forest was glowing red in 1986... :butthead:
