My picks would be Over Super Mario 64--I've only played it on the DS which sours the experience a bit, but to be honest, the level design isn't all that great, and the gameplay is a bit...eh. The camera is something pretty horrid too. FFVII--Worst PS1/2 era FF. Yes, that includes FFX-2. Zelda: Majora's Mask--Loved OoT, hated this with a passion. Imposing a time limit on players and essentially deleting their progress every 72 game hours was a killer for me. Halo--Terrible level design, very repetitive. Multi-player, while interesting, is ridiculously unbalanced and cheap. One ironic thing: the level everyone said was the worst and most repetetive was the only level I actually liked--the Library. Go figure. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island--I owned this back when it first came out, never understood why everyone loved it so much. I beat it, sure, but for me it was pretty boring. And Baby Mario was a prick. Under Deus Ex--Simply brilliant. The best story I've ever seen in a video game bar none, excellent and varied gameplay, and to boot, an excellent fusion of game elements (RPG/FPS/Adventure). Over-looked by nearly all, game developers should study this game for ideas. No other game since released has touched this. Best game ever, in my humble opinion. Banjo Kazooie--Some call it a collect-a-thon, but I wouldn't consider it one any more than Super Mario 64. And this has better level design, better graphics, more variety, a better hub world, a better camera, and in my opinion much better characters. I went back and played through the whole thing about year back, and it was just as sweet as when I picked it up way back in '98. Top five, definately. Harvest Moon 64/Series--Unique, and not for everyone, but a great experience if it happens to be your cup of tea. Most game mags give it mediocre reviews, but I love it. Definately one of my top ten games of all time, no doubt.
HOW DARE YOU SAY FF7 :angry But anyways Over The entire Zelda series- I don't get what everyone likes about it Madden - Not that good of a football game IMO (but neither is ESPN) Under Dynasty Warriors series- Never gets enough recognition Sword of the Berserk- My favorite game for the DC Shenmue series - It was really wonderful but no one seemed to notice it
Over-rated: --Halo: while it is not a bad game, i still wonder why everyone consider it ''the best game of all time'' . ''the best fps of all time'' neither ''the best fps on console of all time''. i actually enjoyed it, but there was just too much space for improvement. --Grand Theft Auto Trilogy on ps2: Okay, this game have a good point: liberty of action but still, i saw better liberty in a video game (Deus ex is an exemple) . For most of player: ''it's the most inovative game ever created and a freaking evolution in gameplay!!!!11'' that's not true at all. I don't think GTA started the idea of killing people in video games, i don't think it was the first one to create a world with living people in it, i don't think they invented prostitutes, Bad dialogues, and car robing either. and guess what... YES, they've already made it all!! indeed, The number three at the end of the name was because they already made the same thing earlier, just with crapier graphics! in fact, it was the same thing (with more ''liberty'' must i add), but in another perspective. Now i do understand that they wanted to make money again by reashing the same game on todays platforms, but i mean..... 3...in 3 years? and still the same amount of people saying: ''i can't freaking belive it! it's a revolution! wow i can finally kill people on the street!! talk about something new and fresh, that i won't be bored of!'' at each episodes? wow. i mean, apart of the textures, dialogues, music and all.... nothing changed! that's just robbing consumers money in my opinion (yeeah, i must add this...because i know i'll start a flame war or something if i don't...). Yes, i admit it, i buyed the 3rd because i could have some fun with it (not a bad game...just WAY-over-rated), but no way i'm gonna buy the others because it's just some ''old barbie with a new hat'', and just to boycott those games that destroys the industry. Under-rated: --Deus EX: einbebop resumed it all --MGS serie: Cout the msx games in, i know these games are quite popular... but it's just too great! hehe. Hideo's a genius! i just wanted to admit my love for this serie, since i don't think i ever did it before here. anyway, the story's so great, with alot of between the lines and couches in it. The direction is just simply amazing, and just beats alot of movies. mario 64 isn't over-rated, it really deserve it. just go in you time-machine for a second and play it back in 96, that was just amazing and revolutioning. the DS version, while good, doesn't honor the classic at all. As for MM it's, with the Adventure of link episode, the black sheep of the series, imo. Much like a hate it or love it kind of game. and i really love smw 2, it was just amazing in every way, imo. pretty stunning game, anyway. it's my opinion and you have yours, this aplies to everyone here.
Dynasty warriors is one of those under-rated games, indeed. but there's just too many of them right now, and there's no revolution in the serie, just evolution.... wich is like taking yesterday's meal, putting it in the microwave for 45 seconds and puting pepper on it to mask the ''Yesterday's meal'' taste.
Over rated: PCE: Dracula X, Sapphire SAT: Radiant Silvergun, S. J. Taroumaru DC: Ikaruga, all DC Sonic games, both Shenmues... I don't know any underrated games heh
Over-Rated: 3D GTA games, Suikoden 3, Castlevania Lament of Innocence, Tony Hawk series, Shenmue (though I do love it, mostly because of Space Harrier and the Tomato Conbini musical theme), Dragon Quest 7, Xenosaga. Under-Rated Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter (Best 128 bit RPG yet). Grandia X-treme (other than the lame name and the lack of a story it's pretty solid), R-type Final, Chrono Cross (the part that has a story is SO great, especially the sad ending). DBZ Budokai 3 (2 was pretty decent, too), Tales of Eternia (TRULY a Classic, too late in the PSX's life cycle), Saiyuki:Journey West (though the funky intro was.. well. funky). Super Mario 2 (american version), Starfox 64.
Wow, you've got some harsh words there. Uh.... Over: Just about everything. Under: Rez, Shenmue (yeah, a lot of people like it, but look at the sales), Most puzzle games (Pop 'n' Pop comes to mind), Cave shooters. I can't believe you don't like Yoshi's Island. Arguably the funnest game in teh series.
Over-rated: - MGS series: OK, they're not bad, but there's too much wank in them for my liking. My friend finished MGS3 in about a third the time he did the second time round. You know how? He skipped all the cut-scenes and dialogue! - Most games that EA make: Though I don't think any of you guys are over-rating them ^_^ - 3D Platformers in general: I just hate them. I'm sorry. They hurt my brain. - FFVII: I thought it wasn't that great. It never compelled me enough to finish it anyway... Under-rated: - FFIII and V: No one cares about them but me, it seems -_-. And that's the real III I'm talking about, not VI! I enjoyed them a lot, but still never finished them... - Any good MSX game. Yes there are some! Metal Gear 1 & 2, Snatcher, SD Snatcher, Penguin Adventure, Aleste, Space Manbow... and nearly everything else Konami and Compile made on it... - The majority of old PC games...
Over-rated: HALO 2: ok the multilayer is awesome but the single player mode isn't that world shocking as it was made out to be compared to the first halo. Gran turismo 4: sure it's a great racing game but it's only improvement over all other GT games is graphics and the latest cars..no online mode..no earth shaking new imporvements. Radient silvergun: why the hell is it called the best shooter ever, ok it's nice but it's not worth a bloody fortune nor is it that good. GTA: San andres: why some magazines gave this game a 10/10 i'll never understand the framerate is still shite..the loading times are god awfull.cars and building still pop-up like it's a 1st gen playstation 1 game it's an amuzing game but damn it has so many flaws it could get a 7/10 at best
Over-rated - Shenmue - What can I say, apart from the story I find the gameplay too monotonos (SP) Lunar Silver Star Story - Probably a bit bias on my behalf because I only started playing it this year after playing several other RPGs that came out after it.....but I still think its boring Silent Hill 1 - Alot of people seem to prefer this to the other Silent Hill games....but Silent Hill 2 is totally the best Doom3 - big pile of poop Half-life 2 - Yes...even I, a Half-life fanboy, thinks the game is over-rated. Dont get me wrong, it is absolutley awesome....but there are bits that could have been so much better and it seems Valve were just lazy (but then again, that may be my perspective as a modder making me bias) Halo series - What can I say, I hate the Halo games with a passion and cannot understand how any sane person can say they are fun. No offence to anyone, but since my entire Uni course is filled with "casual" gamers I get into arguments about why the PC is better than the Xbox all the time so I tend to get angry about it (I mean, how can you argue that what effecyivly is a crap PC with gamepads is better than a new PC ) There are some more, but I dont want to come off as completly negative Under-rated - Biohazard: Code Veronica - I dont know about worldwide....but locally there seems to be a hatred for this game on all 3 platforms....and I dont understand. Its a fantastic game! Even if the PS2 version has dodgey cutscenes....the gameplay is still great. Castlevania 2: Belmonts Revenge(GB) - Man, this has to be my favourite Castlevania (more so than NitM). I swear I play it and complete it on almost a weekly basis.....but it seems relativly unpopular compared to other Castlevania games. Alien vs Predator2(MP) - A fantastic multiplayer game All it needed was a decent coop mode and it would have been perfect (I never could get that damn coop mod to work ).
san andreas used a different style of loading, which is why the popup occurs. They went with that instead of having loading screens every 20 seconds because of the huge size of the game. Think VC on the ps2, but worse..thats what san andreas would be loading wise if they didn't change how the game loads. I think it's an equal tradeoff. These should be non existant in the xbox version anyways, so judge it fairly on the xbox then.
For me the most over rated games are pretty much anything by Treasure Over Rated Rad' Silvergun - Saturn/Arcade Yuu Yuu Hakyosho - Mega Drive (The Namco made SFC version is better but not much) GTA series FIFA series (of course) Zelda series (especially the SNES game. It's good but by no means the best SNES RPG as some call it) Mario 64 - DS (Again it's not bad but by no means what people said it was. Some levels are quite boring). Doom 3 - PC (Dull ! Played it and thought........err nothing. yeah it's a bit scary but it soon looses it's impact) Under Rated Shenmue series by far - Dreamcast / XBox Border Down - Dreamcast and probably many others but my brain has just stopped. Yakumo
Yakumo Indeed! Border Down is AWESOME. I especially like the country-like accordeon on the "arrange" level one. It's a great game indeed, and seriously under-rated. I think, however, Chaos Field and Psyvariar 2 are seriously OVER rated. The Soundtrack in Psyv2 is awesome, though.
now that Corporate America has its slimey mitts in game DEV just about everthing is overrated. "NEW XTREEM MT DEW VERT RAMPIN, HO CAPPIN ACTION - WORD!" just go play River City Ransom
Over-rated: Halo - I love the game, but most people swear it's one of the best games to touch any system. It's really nothing special, when you get down to it. I adore the multiplayer, though. Shenmue - I'll probably get bashed for this. I liked Shenmue (haven't beaten II yet), and I think it's a great game, but I don't understand why everyone loves it so much. Sorry guys . Underrated: .... I'll post again when I can think of some.
the thing about halo is that people hailing it is the best are eaither payed off by bungie or only have an xbox. It's a great game, probably some of the best multiplayer fps fun you can have on a console, but the storylines alone make it over rated.
