Pretty cool stuff! I never thought overclocking a NES would actually work that way - I thought the games would just run too fast if you overclocked it. There's also a guide on overclocking the Mega Drive too...
I'm quite tempted to have a go at the NES one... so many NESs lying around (although gamestation have been taking a lot off my hands for £££s credit waiting for a couple of nice handhelds around Easter time BTW, that site has stolen a load of my fami/cart/sega pics though... :die well, it's nice to be asked at least. kevin
Um... but other than the motivation of actually being able to, which in itself is a quite lofty endeavour.... what would the NES behave like, once overclocked? What.... effects are expected from the .. uh... overclockiness of this new overclocked NES?
Well from the reports it actually made a couple of games more fun as the slowdown was removed... Can't say I'd be too desperate to actually go mad trying it out with a box full of carts or anything, but a nice thing to have done
Oh... wait. Saw the Video. Ha! the music is all screwy! Other than that, this is pretty cool. Now... can a SNes be OC'd ?
You guys don't remember Epiccenter (the "hardware hacker") coming here to plug his site (and sell overclocked Genesis)? He was a total dick as are his projects "I overclocked a NES, it pushes 2Mhz, I'm fecking cool!" XerdoPwerko: anything can be "overclocked", of course it's not always a good idea though. What SNES games need it? Super Ghouls & Ghosts?
They say Kirby runs a lot better, and come to think of it, it did slow down when there's a lot of stuff happening on-screen. I'd say a lot of 90's games like this were pushing the NES too far.
Water-Cooled OC'd SNes running Axelay or Pilotwings or StarFox.... a paint-job like Assembler's Duo and a blue led.... Sweeeetnesss Schwiinnnggg (You know, what I'd really like to do... I have two 2600's with dead boards. I'd like to get another system's innards in there and have a sweet 2600-otherthing?)
LOL assembler ^^. Just look @ http://www.emulationzone.org/projects/cyan/strange/overclock/index.htm Overclocking a SMS @ 8mhz (and more).
I dont think those old CPUs need any form of cooling when OC'ed. Heck, you can OC the Z80 TI calculators to almost thrice their speed and not need cooling, the maximum speed seems to be determined by the switching speed, rather.
