Overclocking an fx chip

    I was reading a recent issue of retro gamer and they had a making of stunt racer fx/wild trax. They talked to Dylan Cuthbert who had some intresting stories on how they faked stuff like physics and speed.

    Long story short he mentiod that durring development they had the game running at a much smoother framerate. He said they achieved this due to the fx chip ability to
    overclock. It didn't happen due to nintendo not being able guarentee it would work right in every cart.

    He mentioned it would sometimes be a little glitchy but made it sound that it could be fixed. Anyway based on this has anyone attempted to overclock the fx chip?

    Yes, every FX game can be overclocked. Starfox is harder because it uses the SNES's crystal rather that one on board the game PCB.

    However all other FX games I've seen have a 21MHz ceramic resonator on board - easy to swap out with a crystal.

    I first tried it 5 years ago with Vortex - the game was a lot easier to play with a 24mhz crystal. I got brave and put in a 27 in Stunt Racer FX and it's a whole lot more fun and responsive.

    Someone also got Dirt Trax running at 40mhz - I think past a point you stop seeing gains (once you overclock beyond a certain point, the bottleneck becomes the SNES' 65836 running the game logic)
