    PAL booster on NTSC NES

Hey people. I just got this PAL booster today, to use my NTSC NES on my PAL CRT TV, which supports 60hz, but displays it in black/white. This box is supposed to make it display in color.. which it does, kinda, but the white balance looks burned out; the score text on Super Mario Bros. which is supposed to be bright white is instead light blue, and the rest of the colors look kind of smudgy. For comparison, if I connect the NES directly to the TV, it displays a crisp black/white image. I've tested the "PAL booster" on 2 of my brother's CRTs with same results.

Also, when the NES displays an all black screen, then my TV (Samsung CRT) acts as if I pressed the AV button on the remote, and displays "AV1" in the corner. The device runs on 9V.. it's like the TV gets a jolt from the converter, then thinks it should init the AV port? Or the voltage drops to a low enough level.. I dunno.

Does anyone have experience with these? I'm thinking there's a resistor for luminance? Here are pictures of the board:
(on the middle picture, the top, leftmost RCA is video-out. The bottom, rightmost RCA is video-in).
