I've been searching and trying for a long time to force my PAL PS1 games in 60Hz 240p/480i Even though my PS2 bootchip is able to force some PAL PS2 games into 60Hz properly it doesn't work with PS1 games. Neither does that GSM homebrew program that can be used to force some PS2 games into 480p I've read that it's the game disc that dictates if the console outputs in 50 or 60Hz. And with the amazing bios-hacking that has happened the last few years for Dreamcast and Saturn I was wondering if modifying the bios would enable the PS1 to bypass the 50/60Hz information on the disc so we can play those PS1 originals in 60Hz? Just a thought, I know nothing about bios-hacking. I'm hoping someone with more insight in this will be able to help out Of course it would be much simpler if I just bought all my games from the US, but living in Denmark I often come across cheap PAL games that I would love to play. I just don't want to play them with black borders and 17% slower speed...
You can change the video mode of PS1 games with a Breaker Pro bootdisc (commercial) or the Import Player Light v2.1 (free): http://consolecopyworld.com/psx/psx_utils_bootcd.shtml
Holy crap, you are right! That does seem to work. I got PAL Strider 2 running in 60Hz right now on my PS2. It's the only game I have tried so far though. I'm not sure I understand why it takes so long to re-position the screen on the PS2 compared to the PS1 (L1+L2+R1+R2 and directionals in-game). So I might just wire up a RGB cable for my PS1 and use that for PS1 games from now on. Thanks a lot
Been trying to find a way to get PAL PS2 games to run in 60hz, specifically Gran Turismo Geneva-Tokyo but not a single patch utility works. Shame my modchip won't do it due to being a clone.
How about Blaze Game Accelerator? I have it but I have no PAL games to test it with, so I don't know how well it does the job.
My Modbo 760 chip saves the settings just fine. I did some more testing with PAL PS1 games and unfortunately the boot disc doesn't work with that many games. Only Strider 2 (the Strider 1 bonus disc doesn't work properly) and Rival Schools works fine of the games I have tried so far.
Latest Modbo 4.0's work fine too. with firmware 1.93 or 1.99 (those are the 2 I have/use, others may work too)
The Game Accelerator does only work for PS2 games. The Game Accelerator is also included in some Xploder revisions (as far as I know V2, V3, V4 and V5 Media Center)
The DMS clones do not allow saving. I know there is controller button or reset button combination that will force NTSC or PAL. Try to use the Modbo 1.93 only, the 1.99 has a hacked version of HDLoader built into the firmware to work with HDD Pro. The 1.99 need 2 Ground and 2 power points to work properly in the 79000, 90000 series and even then they will not boot 100%
I'm using the Mars Pro in my personal v9 which is a DMS clone. As Jinn pointed out they don't do squat and I've yet to find the button combo to force NTSC. Haven't got a 1.93 installed into anything on hand, but I will shortly.
Modbo 760 with 1.93 firmware can't force any of my PAL PS1 games in 60Hz. It does however work with some PAL PS2 games
I know the DMS clones dont save - I just thought I remember APE saying he had a modbo. Must be imagining things again. However, the 1.99 Modbo 4 I have doesn't have any problems with anything - was a normal install on a 79000. How do you get into this hacked version of HDLoader? as it looks no different to the 1.93 from what I see.
Sounds nice. So there is really a way to force or patch PAL PS1 and PS2 games into complete NTSC, eliminating any off center or black borders? Just like an unmodified Genesis or Saturn in most cases does? To be fair often PAL games for those left the NTSC program logic alone and just changed region code or startup video check. Of course it might not work right for games that use PAL's additional lines. If any exist.
a lot of PAL games use the full PAL resolution. Wipeout Fusion, Gran Turismo 3 to name a few popular. Imo it wouldn't make sense to play these games in NTSC as you would loose lines. Furthermore the game might run too fast.
The Modbo 1.93 I installed into an identical v9 definitely will save configuration changes and forced NTSC quite nicely. Specifically, Gran Turismo Geneva-Tokyo. It is PAL optimized as the music played too fast in the menus while in NTSC and parts of the screen did get eaten up by what I'd normally say is overscan but it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't attempting to use the additional lines of resolution that PAL offers. I'll have to play with the vertical adjustment settings later to find out as well as testing out some PAL PS1 games I couldn't get patched to run in NTSC at all. My fear is that since they're ryhtm based games (Dance UK being one of them) that the music, if its not CDDA based, might run too fast too negating the whole point of playing such a game. C'est la vie. On the downside it looks like someone beat the living crap out of the fan connector and it broke soon after I attempted to remove it. Lovingly soldered the wires directly to the connector for now until I find an alternative connection method.
You can, for X titles. Y titles I've tried never patch successfully for whatever reason that is beyond me. However the Modbo 1.93 has successfully run 100% of PAL games in NTSC that patching couldn't handle, so far at least. The games I attempted to patch were all those that either didn't have an NTSC-U or NTSC-J equivalent (PAL exclusive) and didn't have available patches dedicated just to the game itself for PAL/NTSC selection. Hail to thee, modchip.
