There are some fairly simple to use ASF archive handling tools floating around out there. (same applies for ADX convertors) But as for how legal they are, I dunno, but as long as it's for your own private use, I guess the usage of them aren't the end of the world exactly. Also, Alchy's got it there about text/subs swap, it's a total bitch as text is often spread out too. Usualy, you'll find menu texts, names, options and random descriptions, maybe even tutorial text, in what's the game's main exe/launch file. And then you'll find the script in another file, and the font somewhere else and then you're just stuck in an infinite confusing loop of looking for every single individual piece of English material and then have to in most cases manualy edit them into their respective places, something that is much more likely to create complications for the game than going with a media swap. (As long as you know how to do deal with things such as proper extraction of media/files, proper rebuilding of disc-structures/file layouts, downsampling of audio/video if you have to for space saving when going GD -> CD and other little thingies)
I have the Japanese version that you can borrow Eva, if you can actaully rip it and fiddle around with it. Would be a fun project, even if it bore no fruit.
I have a BBA, but never had any luck getting it to work. I only have the Super Black Model DC though. I always chalked it up to that and haven't bothered since.
I have the BBA and Coders Cable and the IP discs to rip GDROMs via a Dreamcast but I don't know how to. There's a guy over at Dreamcasthistory.com who has ripped many Dreamcast titles (old ones) who may help. now that I think of it I may still own the Shenmue game on CDR. At one time I owned every game released on CDR (Back up only, mosty ) but threw them out as I started to get the originals. I'll havea look to see if I still have them. If I don't I know who will. Not to encourage piracy or anything, but it would be way easier to hit the torrent sites or use a CDR than do the rip yourself. For one thing, the audio would already have been downsampled, if it needed to be (with a game as big as Shenmue, it probably did).
i have the cdr of the american version, if someone can find the cdr of the japanese versio it would be great.
