Hello everyone! I'm looking to get Pokemon Box Ruby and Sapphire for the GameCube. The NTSC versions support 480p via the official Component cable and GCVideo but I can't find any info on the PAL version. I had a couple of questions about it for users here who have the PAL version, Swiss, and either the official component cable or GCVideo: Does it support 480p? If not, can I force 480p via Swiss? I heard it supports 480i at 60Hz by holding B on start-up. Is that true? If 60Hz isn't supported at all, can I at least force 576p using Swiss? My monitor supports 576p at both 50Hz and 60Hz. Finally, can I use versions of the GBA games from different regions? I only have the USA GBA games. I rather not spend $300 on the US release and I don't know Japanese yet so the Japanese version would be hard to play. That leaves me with the PAL release which is MUCH cheaper and is in English. Any help would be highly appreciated!
Pretty sure there's only one PAL game that supports 480p and it was left enabled by accident, don't remember the name now. I know games like Resident Evil do support 60 Hz when the B button is held but PokeBox will show a 50, 60 Hz menu on start up. I don't have my GC connected at the moment so can't test if Swiss 480p will work when forced
Except for 480p, the PAL version should be superior for the intended purpose of Pokemon Box That's assuming USA copies only link to English games (I haven't tried), with PAL adding French / Spanish / German / Italian.
All of the GBA Pokemon games are compatible with each other and the things they can connect to. I've used a US Ruby and Emerald with PAL Box and it worked fine. I feel like Japanese Box might only connect with Japanese GBA games actually, but not totally sure. Only some Godzilla game supports 480p on a PAL console, and only by accident. Most PAL Gamecubes don't even have the digital port on the back to connect the cable to for progressive scan. So Box doesn't run in that mode.
Mostly because Nintendo of Europe can't be bothered to finish localizing the main series, they keep giving unaltered American English for such hugely popular games. I'm not sure why the Gamecube games language lock GBA connections. I'd heard you needed a Japanese cart to get Celebi too.
