    Hello everyone.
I'd hate to bring up an old tread, but I am doing work on a Panasonic Q, trying to repair a bad dvd drive. I think I may have found the parts needed for repairing these old consoles, and i thought I might post the info for future reference! I will be doing a youtube video on the repairs soon.

On my panasonic Q I had many things wrong with it - mainly the DVD rom drive. after hours of research it looks the the drive is out of a Panasonic DVD XP-30 or Panasonic DVD XP-50 players. here is a pic DVD Player.jpg
As you can see its the same reflective front, and even the same looking LCD Screen! even the top buttons are the same as the Q.
As of right now, I cannot locate a XP-30 or XP-50 for sale :-/

But looking around some more, the DVD Lens matches perfectly to whats in the Q and the XP-30-50. The Lens part number is RAF-3011A $T2eC16h,!yME9s5qJGKmBQ7UMFSL(Q~~60_57.JPG

Also, the Magnet in the spindle degraded completely over time, and I needed to replace that as well. I was able to find a plastic spindle out of an old DVD rom drive, and it fit on perfectly. you don't need the motor, just the spindle itself with the magnet core.

Another issue that I have come across is the drive not opening. That can be fixed by replacing the Rubber band. The band can wear out over time, and is easily replaced. The part for that is SCX4.6 VCR Square band. $_12.JPG

Then don't! ;-) You're welcome to create your own threads here. As you said, that thread was two years old and to be fair, your information stands on its own. It warrants a new thread, so I've moved it to its own.

By the way, they aren't rubber bands - they're drive belts. They're actually very different beasts.

Yeah take it from someone whose tried it you can't swap rubber bands in. They're elastic and will stretch which typically means they won't operate as a drive belt. Drive belts have some flexibility and elasticity but not nearly as much so they don't have any give when driven around a hub.

And if you do it right the first time you won't have to do it again for hopefully a decade at least.

    Excellent contribution, MikeLyons27! :)

    Any news on your side?

My Q has a smashed drive and there are no (official) replacements available.

It seems as if Panasonic constructed this console around their own drive and controller-pcb.

The very same laser pickup is also used in the Panasonic DVD-RP82 and some other players. No idea if these also use the same drive as the Q. Those from the XP30 and XP50 at least look identical.
