Guys, interested in your opinions on this new open-source GP2X successor, the Pandora. This is the render for it, looks interesting - basically an OMAP/Linux based handheld aimed primarily at emulation, given the specs looks like it will be quite a powerhouse. Dimensions wise should be roughly the same as a DS Lite, with Wi-Fi, dual SDHC slots etc. Any of you guys looked into this? Would it interest you? General thoughts are welcome, I personally am looking to get one (saves downgrading PSPs! :icon_bigg) http://craiginator.bluwiki.com/ ^^ All info on this device straight from the horses mouth, apparently aiming to be released March / April, though I expect this will be delayed, they're aiming at a £200.00ish RRP.
The D-pad and the 4 buttons are placed too high, it's higher than the DS and with the DS my thumb is already up against the upper screen.
interesting machine, but they should have aimed at a different price point... by the way sephiap, would you change your avatar? it make me sick when i use my laptop
lol hypno-cat wins, don't want to make anyone ill :110:, will sort out a new avatar later matey. I think this thing could be faily awesome, dual 16 / 32GB SDHC with PS1 / N64 emulation ( + firefox 3 too) wooop, ultimate gadget. I hear what you guys are saying about the dpad, I find that with my DS too, the dual analogue sticks in the middle would make up for it I wager?
I made a thread about this a long time ago and it only got one reply...:-( Anyways, I've always wanted some sort of portable emulation device. The PSP I own isn't the right kind, and I actually play the games on it. The price is a little expensive though at $320. Full Playstation emulation is a neat idea though. That hopefully also means Saturn emulation, and since they said it would be as powerful as a Gamecube when pushed to the limits, perhaps a few GCN games would work with it. But If I did buy it for emulation I'd probably only use it for SNES up to PS1 games.
I think you're being too optimistic. Full PS1 support means nothing without the appropriate button layout, which the device somewhat lacks (R2 and L2 , not to mention the dual shock stuff). That a system is nearly as powerful as a GC means that it can hold its own , on its own "terms" against the GC - it is in no position to emulate an equally strong system however. Saturn emulation is also something that I would like but I wouldn't get my hopes up. It's only been recently that Saturn emulation has really started to show some decent results, and the power it needs is immense!
This is true, I'm disappointed by the current status of Saturn emulation even on Windows, don't get me wrong the developers are doing an excellent job, but if game programmers found the SS hard to develop for initially then emulating it must be a nightmare! The dual analogue sticks look neat for PSX emulation but I agree, using those function buttons in leiu of the triggers may be a bit difficult... good little time waster whilst on the loo though
Looks tacky, and £200??! thats like a kajillion dollars! J/k, anyway, most people will keep using the PSP becos the scene is huge and the system is getting cheaper and cheaper. Reality is, once the PSP got hax0red to the point that even dumb casuals could do it, the market for open portables like this (like the GP32 and Zodiac) dissapeared.
What are you talking about? SSF on Windows is nearly perfect. And yeah, that thing does look kind of tacky, especially the big goofy font.
Well, you have to have a decent machine to run it on, ideally dual-core. What kind of system have you run it on in the past?
It's interesting, but I'd prefer a slightly beefier GP2X instead. A better processor (dual core, like now), dual SDHC slots, and the option to use a more versatile OS with Touchscreen support. I personally haven't found the video playback to be any good. I can only play a few files (Firmware 3.0.0), are the new ones (200 model) better?
