It's no wonder the XBOX One is selling like shit in Japan. Yesterday I went in to EdOn (formally Deo Deo) which is a BIG electronics chain to see what they had for the XBOX One. They were taking the piss with their display. I couldn't even see the games at first. Can you see them at first glance? Not only that but where's the hardware? There was none in sight. Now you may just think that the store is just really bad at merchandise displays but no, the PS4 section was all in your face with big game posters, hardware and games while the XBOX One stuff is on the bottom shelf spine on! WTF! With this sort of bollocks Microsoft haven't got a chance. It reminded me of when Bayonetta came out. The Xbox version was far better than the PS3 version yet every store only promoted the PS3 version of the game. Pisses me off really. The store in question is the 2 floor EdOn electronics store near Shimonoseki Station in Shimonoseki City. EDIT - As you can see, this is a big store.
Seems like the same old Sony=Japan ('yay!'), Microsoft=America ('boo!') story again. I doubt the situation will change much over the next 20 years.
That's a great pic, I did have to expand it to see the games! To be honest though none of the Xbox one titles really appeal to Japanese gamers. When the Xbox 360 came out at least they had Blue Dragon.
Well, for many things, America is no less if not more nationalist than Japan, so I think this is only fair.
Xbox One has a long way to go to get to the 360s status. It's never been a very popular platform in Japan and retail sales space is expensive. So why would fill your stores with something that isn't selling? I don't even think MS is investing a lot in Japan right now. Shame it's a good system with some good games.
Shelf space isn't expensive. That's just some shit store manager types say. Loads of stores have space to spare here in Japan. They just waste space. Basically they don't want to stock or even try to sell the product.
What MS did to deserve a better place? Funded a lot of AAA japanese centric games? They are not. There is nothing for japanese consumers. Only geeks and expats have interest in xbo.
Well lucky you got Asia to cover you since they mostly have american-western titles available over there i think but i know how you feel that these retailer stores doesn't give a rat's ass about it and it's quite unfair to owners who actually bought it. Then again this also applies with the Wii U over here in the States with barely Anyone buying it.
To be fair to the retailer, it's not like Xbox One is flying off the shelves in Japan. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-exec-dissatisfied-with-dire-xbox-one-sal/1100-6422696/
How wrong you are. From day one there's been some Japanese exclusive Xbox One titles that will not appeal to anyone but Japanese. Basically, stores just give a shit. The original Xbox I can understand because even I thought that was a massive ugly heap but the 360 was a nice looking system with loads of games for the Japanese market. You'd think they'd help suport it more than they are.
The Japanese exclusive title that's been on XBOX One since day one is CHAOS;HEAD 404 Not Found. The odd thing is that it's not actually listed on the Japanese XBOX One site but it is on the console. I even downloaded the demo.
Wow. That surely will sell a console. A title which could sell like 10000 on a popular console in Japan. A title which surely get ports on other system like Chaos;Head after some time. And it is not out yet. Only a demo. First week / Lifetime sales. [360] Chaos;Head Noah (5pb.) {2009.02.26} - 15,831 / 26,767 [360] Chaos;Head: Love Chu Chu! (5pb.) {2010.03.25} - 15,280 / 24,327 [PSP] Chaos;Head Noah (5pb.) {2010.06.24} - 10,745 / 19,131 [PSP] Chaos;Head: Love Chu Chu! (5pb.) {2011.01.27} - 10,753 / 10,753
I think the pictures of the launch day were a perfect explanation of why XBONE is being snobbed by shops shelf space wise. Shops targeting their shelf space on exposing stuff that actually has chance at selling makes perfect sense commercially wise. Even if PS2 games were still selling good I could imagine them putting some shelf space for them. Well shops had two or three people in line to buy the XBONE when it released, no ? That kind of thing happens everywhere, even here in Brazil. Things which I like but are not stocked here by shops because they're slow selling stuff.
Please don't go off-topic. I think it's a bit of that, plus the Sony vs. Microsoft thing... But i also think Microsoft has some of it's faults as well. Ever since the original Xbox, they never seemed to understand how to appeal the japanese market. I'm not talking just about making japanese games, i'm talking about a real marketing strategy. Not only adverts, but creating something that would appeal different cultures. That also mean paying for shelf space. Even if it doesn't make a real difference, they would probably have better sales, creating a customer base. Microsoft did this with the Xbox360 in Brazil. The previous gen was basicly won by the PS2, but most importantly, the whole game market was flooded with imports and piracy. 200 Reais for a 2 year old game was very commom sight. Microsoft launched the Xbox360 here, and even though it was expensive, they made the games cheaper. Some people imported, but bought games locally. Of course, some people still hacked their consoles, but the console and games presence at retail helped recreating the habit of buying games at major chain stores (lost since the days of Master System and Mega Drive). Having a decent price reduction for games after a particular time also helped. When Sony realized that, the Xbox360 already had 70% or more of the official market. Same thing will probably happen with the Xbox One, available in the country since launch last year. Not only is widely available, it's way cheaper than the ridiculous 4000 Reais "Official" Sony Brazil PS4. Everybody that wants a PS4 is importing (from USA or Mexico, boosting sales on those countries) while people that own a 360 or just want a new videogame for themselves, family or son, is getting a Xbox One on retail around here.
First, what is the "5% 3%" thing? I see it all over that shelf. Not when it comes to video games, the Wii flew off the shelves in the States, and the PS3 did well once Sony got its head out of its ass and redesigned it. +1 SO THAT'S WHY SO MANY PS4S GOT SOLD IN THE US, FINALLY SONY CAN KNOW! jk I'm well aware it's more popular here anyway.
