I logged into my Paypal today to check the status of my receiving limits, as I have a couple of things to sell which might push it over the threshold for the year. It wouldn't let me check as I had to specify whether I was an individual or business, which I did. Then it tried to validate my identity online (name, DOB, address) but it couldn't, so now they're asking me to send my passport/driving licence and utility bill scans. Is this normal? I understand the need to confirm people's identity for fraud, but I've been buying/selling for over 10 years. Has this happened to anybody else?
If you've been on eBay for 10 years it does seem odd, unless this is something new after the password reset fiasco this summer.
It sure is strange. Though I've since done some googling and it appears to happen to anyone at any time. On the view limits page, it says "Access to the money in your account has been limited until you provide PayPal with further information required. Complete the steps below to lift your limits." However on the Resolution Centre it says: So it would appear I can still use it as normal? I guess the test will be when I need to purchase something. Stupid Paypal.
Heard this happen to someone before as well. Not everyone has a passport, or drivers license. Just black out everything apart from your name, they don't need to see everything so personal.
Are you trying to upgrade to Premier type account, is that it? If so, that's normal. I had to submit some documents too (not all of those asked apply). It took alot of time to validate though (couple of months).
I wonder what would happen if I photoshopped someone else's photo on to the scan. They don't know what I look like, nor do they need to really. Nope didn't make any account changes. It might have been like this for a while, but maybe I didn't know as I never check my limits. I just bought some stuff from ebay a couple of days ago with no problem.
This happened to me before, back when my account was an "unverified" account. Back then, I did not have a debit card that I could link my Paypal account to, and Paypal did not support the bank transfer test for my region. If I'm not wrong, I couldn't do anything useful with my limited account. But it's been 3 years since that happened.
That's part of the info you blackout. They don't need to know what you look like, and they don't know what you look like right now. As long as the name and address match, that's all they look for.
Don't go giving your personal details which can be used in the wrong hands for fraud so easily. Phone them and explain if they needed your information they would have needed it originally not later in the day and you value your personal identity and security so have no intention of compromising it by sending them official documents which someone could then steal your identity with.
Had this shit happen to me a few months ago. It's because I logged into Paypal on another IP. The thing is, I have logged in from that IP numerous times and had zero problems.
Well I just purchased something from ebay with no problem. I'll check if I can receive funds when I next sell something. If that's ok, then paypal can suck it.
