I dont know if anyone arround here knows anything about PC-DC servers but its worth the shot. im just gonna copy-paste a post i made over at Dreamcast online i hope you guys dont mind. "Hi there guys im relatively new to the Dreamcast online scene, but i have read and studied a bunch of tutorials so i preaty much know how all of this work but the question i have seems a bit noobish i know but moving on.. I live in PAL territory therefore i have a PAL dreamcast, and of course a PAL modem, now i have configured everything for a pc-dc server, but has you may know the PAL modem requires a Line voltage simulator, and my question is simple is there anyway possible that i can pass a line voltage simulator, i simply cant aford one, and in my country is very hard to find any electronic parts to make one, belive it or not our hardware shops dont sell things like capacitors or resistors. Of course i could try and buy a NTSC modem, but has i said its a matter of money i simply cant afford anything too expensive now. Thank you for your time and i hope you guys can help me. "
NTSC modems will ALSO require line voltage to operate. The only difference is that they're inductive coupling (transformer) instead of capacitive coupling and makes the connection work slightly better. An very HONEST and quick suggestion from me is: Get yourself some used/cheap PABX (private automatic branch exchange) and have the PC and DC connected to two of the private terminals. Have the DC call the PC terminal and they should connect as if it were calling an ISP. Man you might be able to find a used PABX for less than 50 pounds. And it does interpret dial tones, simulate the line impedance and power the line circuitry for both answering and dialing modems.
wow that is alot of money, im in the process of building a line voltage inducer, just need to get the resistance and il do something like this. http://www.onlineconsoles.com/content_images/dc/voltinducc.jpg then have a win98 machine to receive the call and im golden. besides im just doing this out of curiosity i would never spent that much money on something i was only going to use for the dreamcast.
ok guys so i have made my Line Voltage Inducer its not perfect but i tell you setting up a SMD resistor is hard has crap, anyway i have tried to connect but my win98 vmware machine just stays in monitoring fase, is there anyway i cant test out the LVI. PS: i was using dreamkey and i have added the blind dial option (ATX0), on the DNS i have "automatic" EDIT. so i tried to test out my cable on my phone, so i plugged both ends one on the wall and the other on the phone and: without the 9v battery it wouldnt work. with the 9v battery worked fine the cable only plugged into the phone with the 9v battery it would not work ( i dunno if its supposed to) EDIT2: so i made a linux vmware machine following the tutorial, and also changed the modem to another one that i have, but i have the same problem, when i send the command, my modem makes a few sounds and then a constant high pitched sound, until it times out on receiving "connect". Also my 9v battery is a little low on power outputting about 5v, i dont know if its a factor, again if anyone has any ideias to help me out il be very thankfull
