    Hi Guys

I haven't posted here in a while, I recently bought a pc engine duo that has been fully recapped and rgb modded and runs hu cards and normal disc games perfectly. However when I play a back up game my cd drive makes a high pitch noise and it only does this with back ups.

I have a LG blu-ray drive that burns lowest at 24x and also have a laptop that only burns at 10x speed. I used both of these drives with IMG Burn.

Should I invest in an old CD-ROM burner and perhaps get good quality CD-R's?
    Im currently using Verbatim CD-R's.

Any help will be much appreciated

    Cheers

I use Verbatim CD-r's and I burned my iso's on a imgburn at 4x. Other than drive movement noises, there's no whining or high pitched noises. My pc engine duo-r hasn't been recapped (yet... next year!) but the CD drive on it runs fine. Haven't got any legit cd's to try on it so can't confirm if the noise from the drive would be any less.

Out of curiosity, what's the manufacturer of your verbatim cd-r's are they? Mine are by CMC Magnetics Corp. Don't know if it'll mean anything but still.

They are branded verbatim CD-R's :) I have done some google research and found Taiyo Yuden are the cd-r's to get so I will be ordering them and a old CD-rom year in January that should hopefully solve the issue either way I will post my results here.

    Thanks for the help AtomizerZero

try another burning program too, sometimes imgburn just doesn't work right. also anything not taiyo yuden don't bother using. the rest are all of poor quality with shitty dye layer, so they stress the cd lens out.

did the seller install a new laser? Its possible the pot needs tweaked a bit on the lens. The new ones that you can buy are sometimes not set correctly.

also get taiyo yuden discs. They seem to work the best.

Im not sure if he has installed a new laser do you know how i would adjust the laser pot? I know that the pot look like tiny screws but im worried i will burn the lens out as i cant seem to find a guide with pictures :(

    Thanks

turn it counter clockwise just a hair at a time. i think its making that noise cause the pot is set too high. its the pot on the laser assembly next to the cable plugs like in this picture:

you should not burn the lens out by doing this. the pot should be white plastic and probably is held in place with some epoxy. it should break free when you try to turn it.

there are also some pots on the duo's board but those should not need adjusted since your system is reading discs ok.

don't forget to mark the original position on the POT with a marker before adjusting!

forgot to mention that i have seen this exact problem before a couple of times. the new lasers are aftermarket and not made by Hitachi anymore. sometimes they come completely DOA. I am thinking your system has to have had a new one installed.
